What is a senior engineering manager?

A Senior Engineering Manager is a seasoned leader responsible for overseeing multiple engineering teams or large projects within an organization. They manage engineering managers or team leads, set technical direction, and ensure alignment with business goals. Their duties include mentoring staff, driving process improvements, managing budgets, and collaborating with other departments. Senior Engineering Managers play a key role in hiring, performance evaluations, and fostering a productive engineering culture. They typically have extensive industry experience and strong leadership skills.

What is a senior engineering manager?

Senior engineering managers oversee the project team to ensure each phase is completed accurately, on time, and within budget. They coordinate with the company’s marketing and sales departments to determine what products or services are offered to clients and then develop those offerings to specifications. As a senior engineering manager, you may also need to troubleshoot equipment or software. To become a senior engineering manager, you need a certificate or degree in computer science or a related field, several years of working in software development, and management experience.

How does a senior engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

A Senior Engineering Manager often splits their time between guiding technical strategy and supporting their team’s professional development. This involves overseeing complex engineering projects, setting clear technical direction, and ensuring best practices are followed, while also mentoring engineers, conducting performance reviews, and fostering a collaborative team culture. Balancing these areas requires strong delegation, prioritization, and communication skills, as well as regularly collaborating with other departments like Product and Design to align goals. Most organizations expect Senior Engineering Managers to actively contribute to both technical and people-focused initiatives, which can be challenging but is essential for team and project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior engineering manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineering Manager, you need a robust background in engineering principles, leadership experience, and a relevant degree, often complemented by prior management roles. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), software development methodologies (like Agile), and technical certifications can be highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and mentoring skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are vital for effectively guiding teams, delivering projects on time, and fostering an innovative and collaborative engineering environment.

Job description

Senior Systems Engineer
Applied Technology Solutions, Inc. (ATS) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to lead systems engineering efforts for complex technical projects supporting customer-driven mission requirements. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who can translate contract requirements into actionable system requirements, drive interface management across multidisciplinary teams, and help ensure technical deliverables are completed with quality, traceability, and compliance.
The Senior Systems Engineer will work directly with customers and collaborate closely with ATS engineers, designers, and program leadership to strengthen systems engineering rigor throughout the design lifecycle. This position will also play a significant role in advancing internal engineering processes, configuration management practices, quality control, and technical review readiness.
Description
The Senior Systems Engineer will provide senior-level technical leadership in requirements development, interface control, milestone planning, deliverable tracking, and engineering execution across a variety of applications. The role supports the full project lifecycle, from early requirements derivation through milestone reviews, verification support, and contract transition-out activities.
This is an engineering-focused systems role, not an IT infrastructure position. The ideal candidate will bring experience in systems engineering for mechanical, aerospace, hardware, or integrated product development environments, preferably within DoD or other highly regulated technical programs.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the derivation, decomposition, documentation, and traceability of system requirements from Statements of Work (SOWs), contract data requirements, technical direction, and customer expectations.
  • Partner with engineering team leads to ensure designs, analyses, and technical deliverables demonstrate compliance with customer, program, and contractual requirements.
  • Serve as a primary point of coordination for system interfaces, including development, maintenance, and control of Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Drive cross-functional communication among engineering disciplines to resolve interface issues, requirements gaps, and integration risks.
  • Support and help lead systems engineering activities associated with technical reviews and contract milestones, including review planning, entrance criteria, exit criteria, action item tracking, and deliverable readiness.
  • Track the status of engineering and contract deliverables to support on-time, compliant execution.
  • Coordinate with Configuration Management to establish and maintain deliverable indices, drawing trees, bills of materials (BOMs), baselines, and controlled technical data packages as required.
  • Support verification planning and evidence collection to confirm that system requirements are satisfied by the final design solution.
  • Support project transition-out and closeout efforts by ensuring engineering deliverables are complete, properly controlled, and aligned with customer and contractual expectations.
  • Promote systems engineering principles and best practices throughout the product design and development process.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of internal engineering processes and procedures related to requirements management, configuration management, quality control, and technical operations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers, helping elevate systems thinking across the team.
  • Interface directly with customers, internal stakeholders, and program leadership to communicate technical status, risks, integration issues, and path to milestone completion.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience, with increasing responsibility in systems engineering, technical integration, or product development environments.
  • Experience developing, documenting, managing, and tracing system requirements.
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary engineering teams through design reviews, technical milestones, and deliverable execution.
  • Experience with interface management, systems documentation, and engineering coordination across functions.
  • Secret DoD Clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret DoD Clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship or other status permitting compliance with applicable export control requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree background in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience supporting DoD, aerospace, defense, or other government-funded engineering programs.
  • Experience with requirements management and systems engineering tools such as DOORS and/or CAMEO.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
  • Familiarity with configuration management processes, technical baselines, and controlled engineering documentation.
  • Experience preparing for and supporting system-level technical reviews and milestone events.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with customers and multidisciplinary internal teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by influence, organize technical efforts, and improve engineering processes.

Why Candidates May Find This Role Attractive
  • Opportunity to influence system architecture, requirements flowdown, interface definition, and engineering execution on meaningful technical programs.
  • High visibility role with direct customer interaction and cross-functional leadership responsibility.
  • Chance to help shape and mature systems engineering processes within a growing engineering organization.
  • Broad exposure to multidisciplinary design, milestone execution, configuration management, and technical compliance in a defense-focused environment.
