Job description

The Hydaker- Wheatlake Company is currently seeking a full-time Director of Substation to join our growing team!

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the Substation Division by driving operational excellence, employee development, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee all substation engineering, construction, maintenance, testing, and commissioning projects, ensuring they are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards.
  • Lead and develop multidisciplinary teams while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and exceptional customer service.
  • Manage departmental operations, budgets, project financial performance, resource allocation, and overall profitability.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, contractors, consultants, and utility partners while supporting business development and company growth initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies, while promoting a safety-first culture throughout the organization.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to support strategic planning, workforce development, and the successful execution of complex projects.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in substation engineering, construction, or utility operations.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing teams and large-scale utility projects.
  • Experience managing multimillion-dollar capital projects.
  • Utility, EPC, or electrical infrastructure experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of high-voltage substation design and construction.
  • Knowledge of transmission and distribution systems.
  • Understanding of protective relaying, SCADA, controls, and commissioning.
  • Excellent financial and project management skills.
  • Strong leadership and team development abilities.
  • Excellent negotiation and customer relationship management skills.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical and business issues.
  • Experience with project scheduling software and ERP/project management systems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
