What are Ryzen processors?

Ryzen processors are a line of central processing units (CPUs) developed by AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) for desktops, laptops, and servers. Introduced in 2017, Ryzen CPUs are known for their strong multi-core performance, energy efficiency, and competitive pricing compared to other brands. They are widely used for gaming, content creation, and productivity tasks, and support features like simultaneous multithreading (SMT) and unlocked overclocking. Ryzen processors are available in multiple series, including Ryzen 3, 5, 7, and 9, catering to different performance needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to work with AMD Ryzen processors?

To thrive as a Systems Engineer working with AMD Ryzen processors, you need strong knowledge of computer architecture, hardware integration, and system troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Experience with hardware diagnostic tools, BIOS configuration, and relevant certifications like CompTIA A+ or vendor-specific credentials is valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you excel in cross-functional teams and resolve technical challenges. These skills ensure reliable system performance and compatibility, which are essential for meeting organizational and user needs.

What are common challenges faced by hardware engineers working on Ryzen processor development?

Hardware engineers involved in Ryzen processor development often encounter challenges such as optimizing performance while managing power consumption and heat dissipation. They must stay updated with rapidly evolving semiconductor technologies and ensure compatibility with a wide range of motherboards and components. Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as software engineers, quality assurance, and manufacturing—is crucial for troubleshooting issues and meeting tight production deadlines. These engineers also frequently participate in rigorous testing and validation phases to ensure product reliability and market readiness.

Job description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.

At AMD, we believe technology can change lives for the better. It can heal us, entertain us, and make us more connected, productive, and understanding of the world around us. And we’re looking for talent who feel the same: people who want to leave the planet better than they found it, those who don’t shy away from humanity’s challenges but are determined to help solve them.

AMD is powering the next generation of supercomputing, high-performance computing, cloud, and AI. Whether you’re designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or creating go-to-market plans, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward.

THE ROLE:

AMD has a broad portfolio of several ML accelerator devices with NPUs (neural processing units) that are integrated in its Client and Embedded product portfolio. The Vitis unified platform (Vitis Unified Software Platform) targets several AMD Embedded accelerator cards. The Ryzen AI software platform (Ryzen AI Software) targets several client CPU devices. Both these devices have NPUs that are based of AMD's proprietary AI-engine architecture.

THE PERSON:

The ideal candidate should be passionate about AI/ML engineering and possess a drive to solve sophisticated issues in a complex compiler tool stack. This role will be in software development, in the AI group in AMD. It will involve working on the next generation compiler tools to enhance the capabilities in Vitis-AI and Ryzen-AI software platforms, to compile Machine Learning networks in a broad scope, and cater to the cutting-edge AMD devices with AI-engines.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specifically, the candidate will work on a new compiler along with other senior developers and domain experts. It will involve working in a dynamic and fast paced development environment, and require collaboration with multiple engineering teams that are geographically spread. This is an exciting opportunity involved in a roadmap to build the next generation compiler from the bottom-up. Some general expectation on the role are:

  • Apply a data-driven and structured approach for analysis and optimization efforts
  • Contribute to AMD's innovation, algorithms, and architectural design changes
  • Develop relationships with technical leads and peers
  • Debug, analyze, resolve existing issues, andexplore more efficient alternatives
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Strong programming skills in C++
  • Experience with compilation stack to any custom hardware accelerator
  • Knowledge of MLIR and dialects is an added plus
  • Prior work using Modern source control system such as GitHub
  • Knowledge of machine learning model structures
  • Experience with AI agents for development or qualification tasks
ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, related field, or equivalent
