What is a Remote Usability Testing job?

A Remote Usability Testing job involves evaluating websites, apps, or digital products from a user's perspective to identify usability issues. Testers complete tasks, provide feedback, and sometimes participate in recorded sessions while interacting with the product. Companies use this feedback to improve user experience. These jobs are often freelance, project-based, and require no specialized skills beyond following instructions and giving clear feedback.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Usability Testing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Usability Testing, you need strong analytical skills, a keen eye for user experience (UX) design, and the ability to evaluate digital products or interfaces, typically supported by a background in UX, HCI, or related fields. Familiarity with usability testing tools (such as UserTesting, Lookback, or Optimal Workshop), screen recording software, and possibly UX certification are often advantageous. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to provide clear, actionable feedback are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate testing, valuable user insights, and effective collaboration with product teams to improve digital experiences.

What does a typical workday look like for someone in a Remote Usability Testing role?

A typical day in Remote Usability Testing involves planning and conducting tests on websites, apps, or digital products by assigning tasks to users, observing their interactions, and collecting feedback. You may spend time analyzing recorded sessions, documenting usability issues, and compiling comprehensive reports for UX or development teams. Collaboration is often required with designers, product managers, and developers to discuss findings and recommend improvements. The work is primarily independent and remote, but regular virtual meetings or feedback sessions are common to ensure alignment with broader project goals. This structure provides both autonomy and opportunities for impactful contributions to the product development process.

Job description

Overview

At Brooklinen, we believe that comfort creates happiness - and that starts with truly understanding our customers. We're looking for a thoughtful, curious, and collaborative UX Researcher II to help our Product Design team make better, faster, and more customer-informed decisions.

In this role, you'll execute and support research that brings the voice of the customer into product development and experience design. You'll report to our Director of Product Design and partner closely with Product Design, Product Management, Engineering, and Brand to help shape digital experiences that feel intuitive, seamless, and grounded in how our customers actually shop and live.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with a strong foundation in UX research who is excited to grow their craft, contribute to meaningful work, and develop into a more strategic research partner over time.

What You'll Do

Research Execution

  • Execute moderated and unmoderated UX research studies, including usability testing, interviews, and surveys
  • Develop research materials such as discussion guides, surveys, and usability test plans
  • Help validate concepts, flows, and experience improvements before development

Research Planning & Synthesis

  • Support the planning and synthesis of research in partnership with Product Design and cross-functional stakeholders
  • Translate business questions and product challenges into clear research approaches with guidance from senior team members
  • Synthesize findings into clear, actionable insights and recommendations

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Partner closely with Product Design, Product, Engineering, Brand, and other stakeholders to inform decisions
  • Communicate research outcomes through concise readouts, presentations, and written summaries
  • Ensure research insights are reflected in product and design decisions

Customer Understanding & Impact

  • Contribute to research across key digital customer journeys (e.g., navigation, PDPs, cart, checkout, search), in close partnership with Product and Design
  • Help the team better understand not just how customers shop, but how they make decisions in the context of their everyday lives
  • Balance rigor with speed, delivering thoughtful insights in a fast-paced environment

What Success Looks Like

  • Independently execute research studies end-to-end with strong attention to detail and quality
  • Build strong working relationships with Product Design, Product, and Engineering, and become a trusted partner in bringing the customer perspective into decisions
  • Deliver research findings that are consistently clear, actionable, and easy for stakeholders to apply
  • Contribute to faster, more confident product decisions by balancing rigor with speed
  • Demonstrate strong judgment in selecting appropriate research methods with guidance, and continue to grow your craft over time
  • Help improve key moments across the digital experience, supporting a more seamless and intuitive customer journey
  • Actively seek feedback and continue building your ability to connect customer insight to business impact
  • Help the team create experiences that feel intuitive and relevant to how our customers want their homes to feel

We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience in UX research, product research, market research, or a related applied research setting
  • Experience executing moderated and unmoderated research from study setup through synthesis
  • Familiarity with core research methods such as usability testing, interviews, surveys, and concept testing
  • Ability to translate research findings into clear, actionable recommendations
  • Experience working with common UX research and analytics tools (e.g., UserTesting, Maze, Dovetail, Google Analytics)
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional partners in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong curiosity, attention to detail, and a growth mindset

Nice to Have

  • Experience researching eCommerce or other high-traffic digital experiences
  • Familiarity with behavioral analytics and interest in connecting qualitative insights with performance data
  • Experience supporting research across customer journeys such as navigation, PDPs, cart, checkout, or search
  • Comfort working through ambiguity and managing multiple priorities
  • Interest in leveraging AI tools to improve research efficiency
  • Familiarity with Figma and collaboration tools to support research execution and communication

Compensation
