What is a remote Silicon Valley software engineer?

A Remote Silicon Valley Software Engineer is a software developer who works for a Silicon Valley-based tech company but performs their job duties from a location outside of the company's physical offices, often from home or another remote location. These engineers design, develop, and maintain software applications, collaborating with teams virtually. They leverage communication and project management tools to stay connected and productive. Working remotely allows for greater flexibility while still contributing to innovative projects typical of Silicon Valley companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Silicon Valley software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Silicon Valley Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), computer science fundamentals, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Experience with cloud platforms (like AWS or GCP), version control systems (e.g., Git), and modern development frameworks is typically expected, along with familiarity with remote collaboration tools. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear written communication are crucial soft skills for remote success. These skills and qualities are essential to deliver high-quality software, collaborate effectively across distributed teams, and adapt quickly in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment.

How do remote Silicon Valley software engineers typically collaborate with their teams despite working from different locations?

Remote Silicon Valley software engineers usually rely on a combination of communication tools like Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms such as Jira or Trello to stay connected with their teams. Regular stand-up meetings, code reviews, and pair programming sessions help maintain alignment and ensure everyone is up to date on project progress. Effective asynchronous communication and clear documentation are especially important when working across time zones. While working remotely can present challenges in building team rapport, many companies offer virtual social events and encourage open communication to foster a collaborative culture.

Job description

Come join VisitorsCoverage, one of Silicon Valley's most successful InsurTech companies, certified as a Great Place to Work!

We are looking for a full-time Software Engineer (AI-First) to join our Engineering team. This role supports a high-performing engineering team by delivering well-scoped technical work across backend, frontend, data, testing, and internal tooling. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer with strong fundamentals, practical web application experience, and a disciplined approach to using AI-assisted development tools to learn faster and contribute effectively.

If you're curious, adaptable, and excited to build modern software in a fast-paced environment, we'd love to hear from you.

This is a hybrid position (4 days in office, 1 day remote). We are located in Santa Clara, California, and are looking for local candidates.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

What We Do:

VisitorsCoverage is an Insurtech company, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, revolutionizing the way travelers search, compare, purchase, and manage their travel insurance. Imagine a place where buying travel insurance is as easy as ordering an item from your favorite online retailer. You know exactly what the benefits are and what each word on the coverage document means, and you are able to zip through the checkout process. We are obsessed with simplifying Travel Insurance! We wake up everyday thinking of new ways to meet the same expectations that users have from their online retailers and delivery or streaming services. We are a team of people who counter the thought that insurance is boring and love the challenge of delighting our users at every step of their decision-making process.

If this sounds like the perfect role and workplace for you, we encourage you to apply for this position! VisitorsCoverage is on a mission to hire only the best, and we are committed to providing exceptional employee experiences with meaningful work and true work/life balance.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain well-defined features across the stack, with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Support backend, frontend, API integration, data, testing, debugging, and internal tooling work as team priorities shift.
  • Use AI-assisted tools for coding, debugging, documentation, and research while validating outputs through testing, reasoning, and code review.
  • Write clean, readable, and maintainable code with attention to programming fundamentals and team standards.
  • Write unit/integration tests and participate in peer code reviews to maintain team standards.
  • Break down problems into clear steps, ask strong questions, and escalate risks early.
  • Contribute to documentation, automation, and engineering hygiene that improve team speed and reliability.
  • Learn the product domain, customer workflows, and business context so technical work maps to real outcomes.

Required Skills:

  • Strong programming fundamentals and object-oriented design principles.
  • Experience with PHP.
  • Solid JavaScript knowledge and familiarity with MVC frameworks.
  • Experience building modern web applications.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and responsive web development.
  • Experience with SQL databases and relational database design.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs.
  • Experience using Git and collaborative development workflows.
  • Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to use AI-assisted development tools responsibly while validating code quality, security, and maintainability.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • 2-3 years of professional software development experience.
  • Experience delivering production-quality web applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team.
  • Nice to Have: Experience with one or more of the following (Vue.js, Python, Docker, AWS, Redis, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, Linux, or third-party API integrations).

AI-Assisted Development Expectations

Engineers in this role should be able to:

  • Ask good questions that clarify the real problem before jumping into implementation.
  • Validate AI-generated code rather than accepting it at face value.
  • Debug problems effectively and distinguish surface fixes from root causes.
  • Understand trade-offs, including maintainability, edge cases, and production impact.
  • Take ownership of the software they build and be accountable for every committed change, regardless of how much AI contributed.

Salary range: $100,000 - $125,000. Salary is dependent on experience and qualifications.

Benefits

  • 100% company paid individual medical, dental, & vision insurance coverage
  • Pet insurance
  • Paid parental leave
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid time off for annual charity or volunteer work
  • Generous paid time off
  • Fitness/Wellness gym stipend
