What is remote program management?

Remote program management is the practice of overseeing and coordinating multiple related projects or initiatives from a location outside of a traditional office setting, often leveraging digital tools and virtual collaboration platforms. Program managers in remote roles are responsible for aligning project objectives with organizational goals, managing resources, and ensuring effective communication among distributed teams. This approach allows organizations to access talent globally and maintain productivity without the constraints of physical offices. Remote program management requires strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills to ensure successful program delivery.

How does a Remote Program Manager effectively coordinate projects and maintain communication with distributed teams?

Remote Program Managers typically use a combination of project management software, regular virtual meetings, and clear documentation to coordinate tasks across multiple locations and time zones. Effective communication is key, so they often establish structured routines—such as weekly status updates or daily stand-ups—to ensure alignment and quickly address any blockers. Building strong relationships with team members through transparent communication and fostering a culture of accountability are essential to overcoming the unique challenges of remote collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Program Manager, you need strong project management expertise, strategic planning abilities, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Jira, or Trello, and experience with virtual collaboration platforms such as Slack or Zoom, are typically required. Exceptional communication, organizational skills, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for leading distributed teams and managing stakeholders remotely. These competencies ensure efficient program delivery, foster alignment across locations, and drive successful outcomes in a virtual environment.

Job description

Mission Summary:

Motional is seeking to hire a Staff-level Autonomy TPM. This role requires strong, experienced leadership to drive complex initiatives across the company. We are seeking a high-impact individual to own and drive key cross-functional initiatives on the path to a driverless robotaxi. This role will operate across our core machine learning capabilities—specifically partnering with the Behaviors, Prediction, and ML Planning teams—to help prioritize and track technical workstreams in support of our driverless goals.

The ideal candidate thrives in ambiguity, possesses technical expertise in robotics or autonomous systems, and has a strong background driving safety-critical ML software and model releases in a fast-paced environment.

What You'll Do:

  • Drive Strategic Initiatives: Own and execute large-scale, complex technical programs critical to Motional's roadmap, focusing on model development and release cycles, while ensuring alignment between senior engineering leaders, product managers, and executive stakeholders.
  • Lead Cross-Stack Integration: Serve as the Directly Responsible Individual (DRI) for high-level behavioral capabilities, managing dependencies and driving integration efforts across Prediction and ML Planning teams to successfully launch large models.
  • Dive Deep Technically: Go beyond surface-level program tracking. Dive deep into ML and behavioral issues to facilitate trade-off discussions, and drive teams to convergence on robust solutions.
  • Identify and Resolve Blockers: Proactively identify, quantify, and communicate technical risks and dependencies. You will be expected to develop and execute mitigation strategies for high-priority issues that could impact our driverless milestones.
  • Influence Roadmaps: Partner deeply with engineering and product leadership to ensure the ML and behaviors roadmap is well-defined, integrated, and aligned with top-level company goals.

What We're Looking For:

  • Experience & Domain Knowledge: 7+ years of experience in technical program management or a similar role, leading complex, safety-critical AI software, robotics, or systems programs. Experience managing large model releases and model development lifecycles is highly preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Proven Delivery: A strong track record of taking large, complex programs from initial concept and ambiguity to a successful launch.
  • Clear Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to act as the primary point of contact for complex programs, with a track record of communicating progress, risks, and strategic recommendations to leadership.

We encourage a hybrid schedule with in-office time at one of our locations in Boston or Pittsburgh to support collaboration, or this role can be fully remote
