Job description

Board-Certified Veterinary Nutritionist

Remote (United States)

At Open Farm we are transforming the way people feed their pets, with a focus on producing premium, healthy food and treats, all ethically sourced from farm-to-bowl. Headquartered in Toronto and with team members across the US, Open Farm is one of the fastest growing CPG companies in North America. We believe that the best foods are made with consciously sourced, top-quality ingredients from farmers and fisheries who believe in doing good for all animals and the environment.

Our holistic approach to pet nutrition sets us apart, and we are seeking a Board-Certified Veterinary Nutritionist to help us continue to ensure our products continue our track record of providing delicious food and treats for pets that meet the highest standards of safety, nutrition, efficacy, and compliance.

As a Board-Certified Veterinary Nutritionist, you will work along-side our Head of Veterinary Nutrition, R&D and Brands teams, and play a pivotal role in reviewing and optimizing our recipes and pet food formulations. Your expertise will continue to ensure our recipes are held to the highest standard when it comes to complete, balanced and safe recipes, while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. Collaboration and close working relationships with cross-functional teams is critical in this role - specifically with our R&D, Quality Assurance, Marketing, and Legal teams- where you will focus on supporting product development and customer education.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and approve recipes to ensure they are nutritionally balanced, safe, and effective.
  • Ensure all products align with Open Farm's recipe standards and ingredient quality requirements.
  • Provide guidance on pet food formulation for dry, wet, treats, and canned products.
  • Maintain proper documentation and records for nutritional adequacy, feeding guidelines, and label compliance.

Customer & Internal Support:

  • Assist with elevated pet parent inquiries requiring veterinary expertise.
  • Collaborate with our Pet Parent Experience (PPX) team to ensure product recommendations are informed by veterinary expertise
  • Collaborate with marketing and sales teams to educate consumers on pet nutrition.
  • Support advertising and promotional claims with sound nutritional evidence.

Regulatory & Compliance:

  • Partner with FSQA, Legal, and Regulatory teams to meet labeling and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with AAFCO, USDA, FDA, and FSMA standards.

Quality Assurance & Ingredient Sourcing:

  • Work with Purchasing and QA teams to ensure ingredient nutritional quality.
  • Help maintain high safety and quality standards across all pet food products.

Research:

  • Develop a long-term view on how Open Farm can conduct and support pet nutrition research that aligns with our business and innovation goals, and can ultimately be leveraged to strengthen the brand

If you're a Board-Certified Veterinary Nutritionist excited about holistic, high-quality pet food and want to be part of an innovative and transparent, mission driven company, we'd love to hear from you!

We're paw-sitively excited about you because you have:

  • DVM and Board Certification by ACVN (American College of Veterinary Nutrition) or ECVCN (European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition).
  • Extensive knowledge of dog and cat nutrition and related sciences.
  • Experience in pet food recipe development (dry, wet, treats, canned) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with dry food manufacturing processes and operations is a plus.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for both technical and consumer-facing content.
  • Passionate about educating and training pet parents about all things pet nutrition

What we offer you:

  • Opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven company dedicated to pet health and sustainability.
  • Work in a holistic pet nutrition environment while ensuring science-backed formulations.
  • Flexible working arrangements, with potential for full-time expansion.
  • Collaborate with a passionate team working to revolutionize pet nutrition.

We are open to part-time or full-time work, hybrid or remote, with the ability to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week. Exact hours and schedule are open for discussion.

AI Statement: Open Farm may use AI tools to help organize and review applications efficiently. While technology supports our process, every hiring decision is made by our team, with care and intention. We also prioritize meaningful human connection, which is why our interview process includes in-person conversations—because technology can support the process, but can't replace the impact of human connection.

Hybrid Work

At Open Farm, we believe in the power of collaboration, meaningful connections, and enjoying our work together—furry friends included! That's why we've adopted a structured hybrid approach that allows you the benefit of a reduced commute while still building strong workplace relationships. Currently, all employees are expected to be in the office two days per week at minimum, with Tuesday and Thursday as our anchor days. In addition to this, each month our Leadership team dedicates three consecutive days onsite to continue to foster alignment and connection across the team. During this time we expect everyone to join us in person to do the same. Please note: our hybrid approach may evolve over time as we adapt to the needs of our team and business.
