What Are Remote Payroll Jobs?

Remote payroll jobs focus on providing payroll services for employees of a business or organization. Your duties as a remote payroll manager include checking timekeeping related to employee work hours, calculating commissions, collect benefits payments and additional payment variables, and issuing checks to employees. In a large business, a payroll manager oversees a payroll processor, whose responsibilities include working to process and issue checks after taking steps to collect benefit payments, tax withholdings, and other dues. A payroll processor or payroll manager can work for one employer or multiple employers on a contract basis.

How does working as a remote payroll specialist impact collaboration with HR and finance teams?

As a remote payroll specialist, you'll rely heavily on digital communication tools to coordinate with HR and finance departments. Regular virtual meetings, organized workflows, and secure document sharing platforms are essential for ensuring payroll accuracy and timely processing. While you may not have face-to-face interactions, maintaining clear, proactive communication and establishing strong relationships with team members is crucial for resolving discrepancies and staying updated on policy changes. Many organizations provide comprehensive training and technology support to help remote payroll professionals stay connected and effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Payroll Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Payroll Specialist, you need a solid understanding of payroll processes, tax regulations, and compliance standards, typically supported by a degree in accounting or related field and relevant payroll certifications. Familiarity with payroll software (such as ADP, Paychex, or QuickBooks), time-tracking systems, and secure data management tools is essential. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective remote communication make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure accurate and timely payroll processing, compliance with legal requirements, and seamless collaboration in a distributed work environment.

What is a Remote Payroll job?

Job description

Payroll Specialist – Multi-State Payroll | Payroll Tax Compliance
On-Site
This position is available for Full-Time (40 hours/week | Monday-Friday) or Part-Time (15–20 hours/week | Monday–Wednesday)
Location: Kirsch CPA Group
Pay Range: $24–$30/hour, based on payroll and compliance experience
Join an Employee-Owned CPA Firm
Kirsch CPA Group is an employee-owned CPA firm seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist to support small and mid-sized business clients with payroll processing, payroll tax compliance, multi-state payroll, agency notices, and year-end reporting.
We believe employee ownership creates accountability, collaboration, and long-term success. Eligible employees have the opportunity to participate in our Employee Stock Ownership Plan / ESOP and share in the firm’s growth.
This role is ideal for a payroll professional who wants meaningful client relationships, and a compliance-focused payroll role that values accuracy, judgment, and service.
What You’ll Do
  • Process payroll for multiple small and mid-sized business clients
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and municipal payroll regulations
  • Support multi-state payroll and remote employee payroll compliance
  • Prepare and support payroll tax filings
  • Register clients with applicable payroll tax agencies
  • Handle payroll tax notices, agency correspondence, and resolution support
  • Prepare W-2, W-3, 1099, and year-end payroll forms
  • Review benefit and fringe benefit taxability
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and documentation
  • Answer client payroll questions clearly and professionally
  • Collaborate with CPAs, accountants, and advisors on payroll-related issues
  • Support payroll-related general ledger entries and reconciliations as needed
Qualifications
Required
  • 2+ years of payroll processing, payroll tax, or payroll compliance experience
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations
  • Experience with payroll tax filings, payroll notices, and agency communication
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to manage multiple client payrolls and deadlines
  • Professional, service-oriented communication style
Preferred
  • Multi-state payroll experience
  • Experience with remote employee payroll compliance
  • CPA firm, payroll bureau, PEO, or outsourced payroll experience
  • Experience with W-2, W-3, 1099, and year-end payroll reporting
  • Bookkeeping or payroll accounting experience
  • QuickBooks Online experience
Why This Payroll Role Is Different
This is not a high-volume payroll processing job. At Kirsch CPA Group, Payroll Specialists are trusted resources for clients and internal team members.
You’ll have:
  • Fewer clients and deeper relationships
  • Compliance-focused work, not just data entry
  • Direct collaboration with CPAs and advisors
  • A professional, supportive team environment
  • The opportunity to be part of an employee-owned firm
If you are coming from a payroll bureau, PEO, CPA firm, or in-house payroll role and want more balance, respect, and meaningful client work, this could be a strong fit.
Benefits That Matter
  • Competitive salary
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance with coverage starting on your first day (minimum 30 hours/week)
  • Eligible for ESOP/ employee ownership opportunity
  • Hybrid work options
  • 8 paid holidays and generous PTO (prorated for part-time team members)
  • HSA with employer contributions
  • Life insurance and disability coverage
  • 401(k) with monthly employer contributions
  • Annual salary review and performance-based bonuses
  • Professional development and team appreciation events
