Job description

Overview
Thoroughly reviews outpatient medical records (Emergency Department-ED; ambulatory surgery, etc.) to specifically and accurately code diagnoses and procedures based on patient's plan of care and treatment, and to also identify allowable ED/Other Outpatient charges when applicable. Verifies that records consistently contain appropriate documentation to justify coding and charge assignments.
Responsibilities
Thoroughly reviews outpatient medical records (Emergency Department-ED; ambulatory surgery, etc.) to specifically and accurately code diagnoses and procedures based on patient's plan of care and treatment, and to also identify allowable ED and/or Observation charges when applicable. Verifies that records consistently contain appropriate documentation to justify coding and charge assignments.
Qualifications
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.
Education/formal training/licensure/certification/experience:
• Health Information Technology degree or similar degree or work related coding experience, including college level medical terminology and Anatomy and Physiology required.
• CCS preferred
• Experience with E/M assignment or drug administration coding preferred
• Must achieve minimum score of 85% on competency sampling
Knowledge, skills and abilities required:
• Working knowledge of CPT coding, modifier guidelines, medical procedures.
• Knowledge of DNV, Joint Commission and other regulatory agency chart documentation requirements
• Ability to work independently and to function as an integral team member within the department
• Understanding of prospective payment system and coding guidelines
• Must be able to work unsupervised and be self motivated
• Computer skills including data entry speed of 45 wpm and experience in Windows environment
• Ability to perform under pressure with ongoing deadlines and production/accuracy standards
• Use of computerized encoder
• Ability to manage competing demands
• Ability to remain productively focused and non-distracted in a remote work setting.
