What do professors do?

Professors are academic professionals who teach at colleges or universities. Their primary responsibilities include delivering lectures, conducting research, mentoring students, and publishing scholarly work. In addition to teaching, professors often participate in academic committees and contribute to curriculum development. They may also advise undergraduate and graduate students, supervise research projects, and engage in community or professional service. Professors typically specialize in a particular field of study and help advance knowledge in their discipline.

Is there a demand for professors?

Professors are in steady demand in higher education institutions, especially in fields like science, technology, engineering, and healthcare. Employment growth varies by region and discipline but generally aligns with the expansion of post-secondary education and research activities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professor, you need advanced subject matter expertise, a doctoral degree in your field, and a strong record of research and teaching experience. Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard), academic publishing platforms, and citation tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help foster student engagement and contribute to scholarly communities. These competencies ensure effective knowledge transfer, research innovation, and academic leadership.

How do professors typically balance teaching, research, and service responsibilities within a university setting?

Professors often juggle multiple responsibilities, including teaching courses, conducting research, and contributing to departmental or university service such as committee work or student advising. The specific balance can vary by institution and department, but most professors allocate set hours to prepare lectures, meet with students, and pursue research projects. Time management and prioritization are essential skills, as professors frequently need to meet deadlines for publications or grant applications while fulfilling their teaching and service commitments. Collaboration with colleagues, both within and outside the university, is common, and many professors find that building a supportive network helps manage these diverse tasks effectively.

What is a professor?

A professor teaches courses at a college or a university in a specific subject. As a professor, your job duties consist of developing curricula, creating lessons, giving lectures, advising students, and grading coursework. Other responsibilities involve staying current in their field by performing research, reading academic materials, and attending conferences. You often start your academic career as an adjunct professor, working part-time and teaching a few courses. Some schools also have online courses run by online professors. After working for several years, college professors may gain tenure at their university, giving them a high level of job stability and freedom for their research.

How do I get a job as a professor?

To become a professor, typically a candidate needs a doctoral degree in their field, relevant research experience, and teaching skills. Academic positions often require publishing research, networking within the academic community, and applying through university job boards or professional associations.

As Chief of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, you will play a critical leadership role in shaping the future of inpatient pediatric care. Working collaboratively with hospital and enterprise leadership, you will help advance innovative care models, support strategic growth initiatives, optimize operational performance, and strengthen our reputation for delivering exceptional patient outcomes and family-centered care.
Division Overview
The Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine includes 19 hospitalists, many of whom are board- certified in Pediatric Hospital Medicine, including three physicians who are dual trained in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The division is home to nationally recognized educators and institutional leaders and serves as the primary teaching service for the Pediatric Residency Program of Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and Nemours Children's, Delaware, and is a main teaching site for hospital medicine learners throughout the region.
As chief, you will foster a culture that supports educational excellence, scholarly activity, quality improvement, and clinical innovation. Opportunities exist to strengthen research collaborations, expand academic programs, mentor future leaders, and further elevate the division's visibility and influence within pediatric hospital medicine.
Division Strengths and Highlights
  • Collaborative Culture: A highly collegial and supportive environment characterized by strong faculty engagement, low turnover, and a shared commitment to clinical excellence, education, and innovation.
  • Established Leadership: Division members serve in influential leadership roles across the institution, including Associate Chief Medical Officer, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Career Counseling, and Phase 3 Clerkship Director, reflecting the division's broad impact and institutional influence.
  • Educational Excellence: Award-winning educators, a fully accredited Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program, and extensive opportunities to participate in undergraduate and graduate medical education.
  • Quality and Innovation: Active engagement in quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, clinical operations, and enterprise-wide efforts to advance pediatric healthcare delivery.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess an academic record commensurate with appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level and demonstrate a strong commitment to academic medicine, education, and scholarly activity.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate proven leadership in inpatient pediatric care delivery, with direct responsibility for clinical operations, quality and safety performance, staffing and coverage models, and patient throughput. Experience leading care model innovation and system-level redesign - including the development of sustainable hospital medicine programs, operational efficiencies, and scalable inpatient care models that support growth - is essential.
Candidates must also bring strong administrative leadership experience, financial and operational acumen, and the collaborative skills necessary to lead a multidisciplinary division while fostering physician engagement, faculty development, and organizational alignment.
