Job description

Job Title: Distribution Engineer / Designer
Job Description

This role focuses on supporting utility power distribution design and reliability work for a major energy client in Pennsylvania. You will perform office-based distribution engineering and design tasks, starting with corrective work on existing infrastructure and progressing to more complex make-ready and low-voltage distribution projects. The organization provides thorough training on all design tools and processes, offering a strong pathway for professional growth within a rapidly expanding utility energy division.

Responsibilities

  • Support utility distribution engineering and design work for infrastructure in Pennsylvania from an office-based environment, with no field work required.
  • Perform design and analysis for ESS4 work, where field personnel have identified infrastructure components in need of repair, and finalize associated work orders.
  • Use the DDS design platform to create and update distribution design packages in alignment with client standards and project requirements.
  • Utilize Crews, the client’s version of SAP, to complete, track, and manage work orders and related project documentation.
  • Progressively take on make-ready design work, coordinating and preparing designs to ensure existing infrastructure is ready for new installations or upgrades.
  • Eventually perform low-voltage distribution (LVD) design tasks, supporting reliability and capacity improvements in the power delivery network.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering, construction services, site development, and utility energy teams to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant project deliverables.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to power distribution and distribution design engineering tasks, maintaining high standards of safety and reliability.
  • Maintain organized records of design work, work orders, and project status within DDS and Crews systems.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development to expand knowledge of utility distribution design, industry standards, and client-specific processes.
  • Contribute to a growing utility energy division by supporting new contracts and service agreements with multiple utility companies throughout the Midwest.
Essential Skills
  • Experience or education in electrical engineering, power distribution, or related engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to perform or learn distribution design and distribution design engineering tasks for utility power delivery systems.
  • Capability to learn and use DDS as the primary design software for distribution design packages.
  • Capability to learn and use Crews, the client’s SAP-based system, to complete and manage work orders.
  • Understanding or ability to quickly learn concepts related to power delivery, make-ready design, and low-voltage distribution work.
  • Strong analytical skills to review field findings, perform design analysis, and finalize work orders accurately.
  • Ability to work on-site at least three days per week in a designated office location and transition to partial remote work after training.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with engineering teams and utility clients.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, compliant, and reliable design documentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Interest in building a long-term career in the utility energy and power distribution industry.
  • Willingness to grow into a lead role, serving as a primary point of contact for utility clients and overseeing awarded work.
  • Motivation to pursue professional engineering development, including preparation for the FE exam and eventual PE licensure, with organizational support.
  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly growing department that is expanding its team and service offerings.
  • Openness to supporting utility work for multiple major utility companies across the Midwest and potentially out-of-state projects to broaden industry experience.
Work Environment

You work primarily in an office setting with no requirement for outdoor field work. Initially, you spend three days per week in a designated office, with the opportunity to work from home two days per week once training is complete. Office locations include Taylor, MI; Grand Rapids, MI; Flint, MI; Bay City, MI; Columbus, OH; and Cincinnati, OH, with the requirement to be physically present in one of these offices at least three days each week. You use DDS for design work and Crews, a SAP-based system, for work order management, alongside other engineering and utility-related tools. The role sits within a civil consulting engineering environment that supports utility industry projects, construction services, site development, survey, storm water, transportation, waste water, and a dedicated utility energy division. The division is experiencing significant growth, creating opportunities for advancement and exposure to large-scale distribution and reliability contracts. During the initial nine-month period, you receive one week of vacation and six holidays; upon transitioning to direct employment, you receive two weeks of vacation, six sick days, and nine holidays. The culture encourages continuous professional development, including support for engineering staff pursuing FE and PE credentials, and offers the chance to work on a variety of utility projects with multiple major utility companies throughout the Midwest.
