AES is hiring for a Relay Engineer (all levels) to join our Engineering Services Team at AES Ohio.

This position is located at our office in Dayton, Ohio. The ideal candidate will live in Dayton, Ohio, or be willing to relocate. AES is offering relocation assistance. In addition, we offer a competitive salary and generous starting paid time off of 22 days each year.

Job Description

This position is responsible for the engineering and design requirements for protective relaying to detect and isolate faults on AES Ohio's transmission and distribution system.

Provide assigned engineering relay designs for all or parts of substations, carrying out specific job assignments including: preparation of relay systems recommendations, evaluations of proposals, design of relay protection zones and control systems, construction consults and field engineering.

Provide support for projects of various complexities and assist with project documentation procedures.

Respond to emergencies including long duration customer outages and storm service restoration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or other related discipline from an ABET-accredited college/university.
  • All levels of relevant work experience will be considered. Will consider Spring, Summer and Fall 2026 graduates.

Preferred Skills, Abilities

  • Power engineering experience
  • Familiarity with relevant utility operations (transmission, distribution)
  • Familiarity with digital logic and/or Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • Willing to take FE exam in pursuit of Professional Engineering License
  • Must possess a positive attitude and priority for safe and reliable operations

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform relay setting calculations, coordination studies, and short circuit studies
  • Maintain short circuit model and protection engineering databases
  • Support NERC compliance program
  • Evaluation of relay performance following system events
  • Support commissioning of new relay equipment and systems by field technicians Investigate and resolve protection and control system operation issues
  • Support field staff in construction and maintenance activities
  • Develop new and follow established work practices to ensure a safe work environment
  • Aid in system restoration during storm events.
