Point-of-Sale (POS) Accounting Manager
JOB SUMMARY
Prepares financial reports, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis while overseeing the financial integrity of Point of Sale (POS) and retail accounting operations. Reviews and reconciles financial statements, POS transactions, and store sales data, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and alignment with accounting principles. Leads a specialized Front End Services accounting team responsible for journal entries, reconciliations, financial reporting, and analysis.
Serves as a subject matter expert for POS accounting, supporting system updates, new business initiatives, and cross-functional partners including Front End Operations and Digital teams. Analyzes financial data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement. Supports accounting staff in month-end closing, audit preparation, financial planning, and system implementations. Requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in accounting software, POS systems, and Microsoft Excel.
KEY RESPONSIBILITY & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Leads multiple functional teams by managing, prioritizing, and reviewing complex accounting processes-including POS retail accounting-to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and effective resource deployment. Establishes expectations and direction for both general accounting and POS-specific functions. Drives financial performance and accountability through oversight of earnings, cash flow, profitability, and POS financial integrity. Ensures accurate daily reconciliation of store sales data to downstream systems and the general ledger.
Drives departmental success by developing high-performing teams through coaching, mentorship, cross-training, and technical accounting guidance. Aligns development plans with strategic objectives and supports staff responsible for POS accounting functions. Promotes a culture of excellence through ongoing feedback and effective collaboration with Front End Operations and Digital partners. Establishes clear performance metrics and annual team goals.
Drives strategic execution by promoting a clear vision across stakeholders and translating objectives into actionable, customer-focused initiatives. Serves as the primary accounting partner to the POS Digital Team, supporting system implementations, requirements gathering, design input, testing, and deployment. Applies deep understanding of systems, POS data flow, and financial impacts to drive informed decisions that balance urgency, value, materiality, and risk.
Identifies major issues and recognizes trends and their general implications for the business. Evaluates business opportunities to make strategic choices that effectively mitigate financial risks and communicates remediation plans. Actively pursues continuous improvement
Actively pursues continuous improvement to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness, and overall performance of existing business processes. Uses metrics and measures to identify areas of enhancement and drive decisions and improvements. Understands materiality, speed to delivery, urgency, and risks.
Comprehensive knowledge of business principles, flow of data, and relevant regulations (i.e., GAAP, Sales Tax, Payroll) and applicable regulatory standards to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance. Provides regulatory guidance within the scope of financial supervision, ensuring alignment with internal controls, audit readiness, and evolving industry requirements.
Strong management / leadership skills with demonstrated success in leading and working complex issues through the team with the ability to influence and guide. Ablity to manage multiple priorities and quickly shift focus. Ability to coach, mentor and develop others.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with a demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies. Strong understanding of data flow across systems, with the capability to analyze system logic and translate business impact to identify problems and support solutions.
Applies advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to comprehensively understand outcomes and opportunities, inform strategic decision-making, optimize departmental performance, and align operations with organizational goals.
Expert verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively and confidently interact with business leaders. Effectively translates Accounting topics into easily understood information through impactful visualizations.
QUALIFICATIONS & KEY REQUIREMENTS
Leads supervisors and/or less experienced professionals (2 or more) who exercise latitude and independence. May lead one or more teams or departments, making decisions based on business objectives and allocated resources, ensuring adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans, and performance requirements. Establishes operational objectives and work plans, and delegates assignments. Executes and modifies company policies, implementing new standards, products, processes, and mid-term business plans for assigned unit(s). Directs team to complete objectives-oriented assignments by looking beyond existing methodologies and implementing strategic policies to resolve complex issues with significant cross-functional impact. A portion of time is normally spent performing individual tasks related to the group/function.
Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals will result in critical delays in schedules and/or group operations which may jeopardize overall business activities.
Exercises supervision in terms of costs, methods, and staffing. Responsible for hiring, firing, and performance/pay reviews.
Bachelor's/master's degree in a relevant field of education and/or work experience leading successful projects and coaching/mentoring others in group or team/department. Completion of H-E-B leadership programs where applicable.
  • 7+ years of experience in accounting / finance field
  • 2+ years Leadership experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related field
  • Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP and regulatory accounting practices
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft Financials a plus
