Job Title: Polishing Machine Operator

$20/hour

1st Shift 5a-3:30p M-Th OT Fri as needed

Job Description

The Polishing Machine Operator finishes and polishes metal auto body parts, primarily fenders for fire trucks, with a strong focus on cosmetic quality. This role involves operating polishing machines and hand tools to achieve smooth, visually appealing surfaces while maintaining the correct contours and dimensions of each part. The position also includes basic machine operation tasks related to fastening nuts and bolts onto sheet metal components.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare metal parts and fenders for polishing by gathering, inspecting, and verifying materials and supplies for correctness and quality.
  • Perform polishing operations on metal fenders using machine polishers and hand tools to achieve a high-quality cosmetic finish.
  • Operate polishing equipment such as hand files, grinders, disks, rotary sanders, and abrasive wheels to smooth and refine metal surfaces.
  • Remove bumps, indentations, and imperfections from metal parts without stretching or cutting through the finished piece, carefully maintaining contours, edges, and dimensions.
  • Operate a PEM-type machine or similar equipment to screw nuts and bolts onto various pieces of sheet metal, following specifications and using a tape measure as needed.
  • Interpret and use a tape measure accurately to ensure parts meet dimensional requirements and quality standards.
  • Use hand and power tools safely and effectively for metal finishing, polishing, grinding, sanding, and buffing tasks.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including consistent use of required personal protective equipment such as a full suit and respirator helmet.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members on the manufacturing floor and support related tasks as needed to meet production goals.
  • Adapt to a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and perform additional duties as assigned, including accepting other jobs and responsibilities when necessary.
  • Work overtime when required to support production schedules and customer demands.

Essential Skills

  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to learn and operate polishing machines and related equipment.
  • Experience or strong comfort using hand and power tools for metal finishing, including grinders, sanders, and buffing tools.
  • Ability to interpret and use a tape measure accurately for metal fabrication and finishing work.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform repetitive movements with good dexterity and hand–eye coordination.
  • Capability to stand for up to 10 hours per day and lift at least 50 pounds in a non–temperature-controlled environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime when needed.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to support other jobs and duties when necessary.
  • Consistent and proper use of a respirator helmet and other personal protective equipment as required.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing environment on a busy production floor, working alongside other machine operators, machinists, forklift operators, and supervisors. The work area is dirty, dusty, and can become very hot, especially in the summer, and it is not temperature controlled. The position involves standing for long periods and handling heavy parts. You will regularly use polishing machines, grinders, disks, rotary sanders, abrasive wheels, and other hand and power tools. A full protective suit is required while working, and personal protective equipment, including a respirator helmet, must be worn when polishing parts. The standard shift runs from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with additional hours on Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and overtime may be required based on production needs.
