A planner scheduler implements work schedules for both staff and equipment in an industrial or construction setting. As a planner scheduler, your responsibilities include examining plans for a project and developing a workable schedule, as well as making recommendations on existing schedules to increase productivity, decrease cost, and balance the workload. The job goes beyond simply deciding who goes where when. You are responsible for making sure the schedule meets government safety regulations, as well as labor agreements. You must have an immense labor law knowledge, an understanding of the industry, and keen time management and organizational skills.
| Aspect | Planner Scheduler | Maintenance Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires certifications in planning, scheduling, or related fields; often an associate or bachelor’s degree | Requires technical certifications or trade licenses; often a high school diploma or technical training |
| Work Environment | Office-based with some site visits; focuses on planning and coordination | Hands-on, on-site work performing repairs and maintenance |
| Industry Usage | Common in manufacturing, oil & gas, utilities, and facilities management | Common in industrial, manufacturing, and facility maintenance sectors |
The Planner Scheduler primarily focuses on creating and managing maintenance schedules, coordinating resources, and ensuring timely completion of tasks. Maintenance Technicians perform the actual hands-on repairs and maintenance work. While both roles are essential for operational efficiency, the Planner Scheduler handles planning and coordination, whereas Maintenance Technicians execute the physical work.
