UC San Diego Health Perioperative Services performs more than 40,000 surgical and procedural cases annually across multiple hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and procedural areas. The Associate Director, Perioperative Business Operations will support the growing operational, financial, and strategic complexity of Perioperative Services across UC San Diego Health. This role will provide dedicated oversight of financial performance, productivity, labor analytics, block utilization, volume forecasting, capital planning, access optimization, and strategic growth initiatives. The position will serve as the primary liaison between operations, finance, analytics, and clinical leadership to ensure data-driven decision-making and fiscal stewardship.
As a recognized expert applies comprehensive knowledge of business intelligence practices, applications and advanced analytics to lead projects of greatest size, complexity and/or scope that have critical impact across the health system. Conducts full data analysis for strategic projects. Consults with key business and/or clinical leaders to gather data and reporting requirements for the most complex business intelligence solutions and analytics.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management: Prepares and monitors multi-million-dollar operating and capital budgets, analyzes revenue and reimbursement trends, conducts cost-benefit analyses, and supports long-range financial planning to ensure fiscal stewardship across Perioperative Services.
Supply Chain & Inventory Management: Provides oversight of surgical purchasing contracts, inventory management, vendor relationships, and supply chain operations to ensure cost-effective, reliable, and uninterrupted support of clinical operations.
Data Analytics & Performance Reporting: Develops and maintains analytics and reporting related to OR block utilization, throughput, productivity, access, financial performance, and operational metrics to support data-driven decision-making and strategic planning.
Operational Efficiency & Process Improvement: Leads initiatives focused on workflow optimization, throughput improvement, capacity management, and the elimination of operational bottlenecks across the perioperative continuum to maximize efficiency and patient access.
Surgical Value Analysis Leadership: Serves as Co-Chair of the Surgical Value Analysis Committee, partnering with clinical and operational leaders to evaluate products, technologies, and purchasing decisions. Responsible for preparing, coordinating, facilitating, and managing the overall value analysis program to support clinical excellence, operational effectiveness, and financial stewardship.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in related area and seven or more years of relevant healthcare operations experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
- Experience and proven success in knowledge of business intelligence functions, advanced analytics, industry standards and best practices.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex financial operations within a healthcare, academic medical center, hospital, surgical services, or similarly complex environment. Advanced knowledge of operating and capital budgeting, financial forecasting, variance analysis, revenue and reimbursement trends, productivity management, cost-benefit analysis, and long-range financial planning.
- Proven ability to interpret financial and operational data, identify performance gaps and emerging trends, develop actionable recommendations, and communicate findings to executive, clinical, and operational leaders.
- Experience supporting the development, management, and prioritization of multi-million-dollar operating and capital budgets, including evaluation of business cases, return on investment, resource requirements, and organizational impact.
- Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare supply chain, surgical purchasing, inventory management, contracting, product standardization, vendor management, and cost-reduction strategies. Ability to partner with Supply Chain, Finance, clinical leaders, physicians, and vendors to improve value while maintaining quality, safety, and continuity of patient care.
- Experience developing and managing business intelligence solutions, executive dashboards, performance reports, and advanced analytics related to financial performance, labor productivity, procedural volume, capacity, access, throughput, and resource utilization.
- Advanced proficiency in collecting, validating, analyzing, and interpreting large and complex datasets from multiple information systems. Ability to translate data into clear operational insights, strategic recommendations, and measurable improvement plans.
- Demonstrated knowledge of perioperative or procedural operations, including operating room block utilization, case volume forecasting, scheduling, patient access, throughput, staffing productivity, capacity management, and operational performance measurement.
- Experience leading complex operational improvement initiatives across multiple departments, locations, or stakeholder groups. Demonstrated ability to evaluate workflows, identify operational bottlenecks, facilitate process redesign, establish performance measures, and sustain measurable improvements.
- Knowledge of process improvement methodologies and change-management principles, with demonstrated success leading initiatives that improve efficiency, access, productivity, financial performance, or the patient and provider experience.
- Experience supporting value analysis, product evaluation, technology assessment, clinical standardization, or purchasing governance within a healthcare environment. Ability to evaluate the clinical, operational, financial, safety, and strategic implications of products, services, equipment, and emerging technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare, coordinate, facilitate, and manage multidisciplinary committees, executive workgroups, and strategic initiatives. Ability to establish agendas, develop supporting analyses, facilitate decision-making, document outcomes, assign accountability, and monitor implementation.
- Proven ability to build effective partnerships and influence outcomes across clinical, operational, financial, technical, and administrative functions without relying solely on direct authority.
- Strong project and program management skills, including the ability to manage multiple high-priority initiatives, competing deadlines, complex dependencies, and projects of significant organizational scope and impact.
- Advanced written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to present complex financial, analytical, and operational information clearly and credibly to physicians, nursing leaders, executives, committees, and other key stakeholders.

- Significant progressive experience in healthcare business operations, preferably within a large academic medical center, integrated health system, hospital, perioperative services, procedural services, or other complex clinical environment.
- Direct experience supporting perioperative, surgical, or procedural operations, with a strong understanding of operating room utilization, procedural volume, staffing productivity, patient access, scheduling, throughput, supply expense, capital needs, and service-line growth.
- Demonstrated success managing or supporting large operating and capital budgets, developing financial forecasts, evaluating business cases, conducting return-on-investment analyses, and identifying sustainable opportunities to improve revenue, productivity, and expense performance.
- Advanced experience with healthcare business intelligence, data visualization, dashboard development, financial modeling, and executive-level performance reporting. Experience working with enterprise analytics platforms, electronic health record data, financial systems, and productivity reporting tools.
- Proven record of leading complex, cross-functional initiatives that produced measurable improvements in financial performance, labor productivity, capacity utilization, patient access, operational efficiency, or cost reduction.
- Experience with healthcare clinical supply chain, strategic sourcing, contracting, inventory optimization, product standardization, vendor management, and surgical value analysis.
- Prior experience leading or facilitating multidisciplinary value analysis, capital planning, operational review, or strategic governance committees involving physicians, nursing leaders, finance, supply chain, and executive stakeholders.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $123,000 - $237,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $58.91 - $113.89
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
