How can I get a job in payroll without prior experience?

You can start a career in payroll without experience by seeking entry-level positions such as Payroll Clerk or Payroll Assistant. Employers often look for candidates with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Taking online courses in payroll fundamentals or obtaining a payroll certification can also enhance your chances. Additionally, experience in administrative or finance-related roles can be valuable. Networking and applying for internships or temporary positions can help you get started.

What is the difference between Payroll Without Experience vs Bookkeeper?

Payroll Without Experience roles are typically entry-level positions requiring minimal or no prior knowledge, often trained on the job. Bookkeeper roles may require basic accounting skills but can also be entry-level. Both are common in office environments and serve different but related functions in financial administration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Payroll position without prior experience, and why are they important?

To thrive in an entry-level Payroll position, you need strong attention to detail, basic math skills, and at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with payroll software (such as ADP or QuickBooks), Microsoft Excel, and an understanding of payroll regulations is typically required, though on-the-job training is common. Organizational skills, reliability, and discretion with sensitive information are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure payroll is processed accurately, confidentially, and in compliance with legal requirements, supporting both employees and the organization.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level payroll professionals without prior experience?

Entry-level payroll professionals often face challenges such as learning complex payroll software, understanding payroll regulations, and managing strict deadlines. Adapting to frequent changes in tax laws and company policies can also be demanding. However, most organizations provide thorough training and support from experienced colleagues, enabling new payroll staff to gradually build confidence and expertise. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and a willingness to ask questions are key to overcoming these initial hurdles.

Job description

Bilingual Payroll & Employee Support Specialist
Salary: $50,000–$60,000
Location: Orlando, FL (Fully Onsite)

Looking to break into payroll/HR without prior payroll experience and get trained the right way? This is a rare entry-level opportunity with a stable, people-first construction company where you’ll gain hands-on experience, build a long-term career, and become the go-to support person for employees in the field.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out:

  • True entry-level payroll opportunity - no prior payroll experience required
  • Join a tenured, tight-knit team where employees build long-term careers
  • Company culture focused on respect, stability, and growth (not churn)
  • Get exposure to multiple systems, processes, and HR functions early in your career
  • Work directly with employees daily - highly interactive and impactful role
  • Leadership is looking for someone to grow into a cornerstone employee
  • Be part of a company working on high-visibility commercial construction projects

Key Responsibilities for the Bilingual Payroll Specialist:

  • Process bi-weekly payroll (office staff) and weekly payroll (field & federal project workers)
  • Work within Sage 100 Contractor and manage time tracking from field-based apps
  • Handle high-volume employee inquiries over the phone supporting field workers daily
  • Assist with new hire onboarding including E-Verify, background checks, and system setup
  • Support payroll taxes, unemployment claims, employee verifications, and benefit deductions
  • Assist with certified payroll reporting (full training provided)
  • Manage multiple systems and tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications for the Bilingual Payroll Specialist:

  • Bilingual in English & Spanish (REQUIRED)
  • Strong phone presence – must be comfortable being on the phone frequently throughout the day
  • Ability to handle high-volume work and juggle multiple systems/tasks at once
  • Entry-level friendly; payroll experience is NOT required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (or similar) preferred OR equivalent relevant experience
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Who Thrives in This Role:

This role is ideal for someone who:

  • Enjoys fast-paced, high-volume environments
  • Is comfortable being on the phone a large part of the day
  • Likes helping others and being a go-to problem solver
  • Can stay organized while handling multiple systems, tasks, and priorities
  • Is looking for a long-term, stable career path in payroll/HR

Bottom line: If you’re bilingual, people-oriented, and eager to build a career in payroll/HR, this is the kind of role where you can get your foot in the door, get trained, and grow for years to come.
