Can you make $100,000 as a bookkeeper?

Pay bookkeepers typically earn between $40,000 and $65,000 annually, with higher salaries possible for those with extensive experience, certifications, or working in specialized industries. Reaching a $100,000 salary is uncommon for entry-level or standard bookkeeping roles but may be achievable for senior or managerial positions, especially in larger organizations or with advanced skills in accounting software. Continuing education and certifications like QuickBooks or CPA can help increase earning potential.

What are the 4 types of bookkeeping?

The four main types of bookkeeping are single-entry, which records each transaction once; double-entry, which records debits and credits for accuracy; cash basis, which records transactions when cash is received or paid; and accrual basis, which records transactions when they occur regardless of cash flow. Bookkeepers often use accounting software and may specialize in one or more of these methods depending on the business needs.

Many bookkeepers now use AI tools to enhance their work rather than be replaced by them.

What are Pay Bookkeepers?

Pay Bookkeepers are financial professionals responsible for managing and recording an organization's payroll transactions. They ensure that employees are paid accurately and on time by calculating wages, withholding deductions, and maintaining payroll records. Pay Bookkeepers may also handle tax filings, generate payroll reports, and assist with compliance to labor laws and company policies. Their attention to detail helps prevent payroll errors and ensures smooth financial operations for the business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pay Bookkeeper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pay Bookkeeper, you need strong numerical accuracy, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of accounting principles, often supported by a degree or certification in bookkeeping or accounting. Familiarity with payroll software, spreadsheets, and accounting systems like QuickBooks or Xero is typically required. Organizational skills, integrity, and effective communication help bookkeepers manage sensitive payroll data and collaborate with colleagues. These skills and qualities ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll, compliance with regulations, and the financial well-being of employees and the organization.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A pay bookkeeper typically earns less than $10,000 a month without a degree, as their average salary is lower. High-paying jobs that can reach or exceed $10,000 monthly without a degree often include roles like sales managers, real estate brokers, or skilled trades such as commercial pilots or certain tech sales positions, which may require experience, certifications, or specialized skills. These roles often involve commission, bonuses, or performance-based pay to reach higher income levels.

Responsibilities
Backyard Bookkeeper is looking for new senior bookkeepers to join our team. As a member of our accounting team, you will be keeping the books (data entry, reconciliation, review, financial statements) for a handful of regular clients, taking responsibility for enterprise clients with more complex financial reporting, as well as helping with incoming large projects that require cleanup or setup before we can transition them to "maintenance mode" bookkeeping.
This is a w-2 position and requires you to sign a non-compete agreement.
You will be working from home, although we have in-person team lunches quarterly and two annual company events. We are looking for residents of Utah, but we may consider out-of-state candidates on a case by case basis.
Qualifications
  • Daytime availability for meetings and client calls. Even though you can do most of the work whenever you want, you must have regular availability during regular business hours in order to communicate with your clients and participate in team meetings and training. In addition, our training is pretty hands-on, and there will be more required daytime Zoom meetings for the first 2-4 months of your employment.
  • Prepared to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. There is an option to increase to 35-40 hours per week over time.
  • Good at managing multiple ongoing projects across several clients.
  • Able to provide good, consistent service to clients who are sometimes assertive and demanding.
  • At least three years of full-charge accounting experience in a small business environment (including data entry, A/R, A/P, reconciliations, etc).
  • Thorough understanding of general accounting/double-entry bookkeeping principles, comfortable making journal entries correctly.
  • Excellent communication skills, including through email, phone, video chat, and other online media; be able to respond to messages within one business day.
  • Self-motivated, able to work effectively under deadlines without much supervision, excellent follow-through.
  • Have your own computer with a number pad, headset, and webcam, along with a good internet connection.
  • Type at least 50 WPM, not afraid of data entry (sometimes it gets tedious, but we do our best to mix it up with more interesting work).
  • Generally tech savvy on computers, Windows, Microsoft Office, and internet; able to learn new software quickly.

Additional Information/Benefits:
  • Flexible hours
  • On the job training and development
  • Work from the comfort of your own home
  • Interact with lots of interesting people and companies in varying industries
  • Have a variety of ongoing projects, rather than keeping the same routine every day and week
  • Mileage and home office expense reimbursements
  • Company IRA matching up to 3%
  • Each team has an in-person meeting (usually lunch or dinner) once a quarter - attendance is required in most cases
  • We hold two events each year in the SLC, Utah area: a company retreat in the fall and a holiday party in early December. Attendance is required at both events if you live within reasonable traveling distance (mileage is reimbursed). If not, the company will pay for a plane ticket to at least one of the semiannual get-togethers.
  • We currently have an office location in Sandy, Utah. You are welcome to take advantage of the office space if you prefer to work outside of your home office some of the time.

***One last note: we have an intensive, careful hiring process because we are dedicated to choosing the best qualified candidates who will work well within our company culture and provide excellent service to our clients. Please be prepared to have as many as five interviews before we make any final decision, and the whole process may take several weeks.
