What is a part-time legal job?

Part-time legal jobs are positions within the legal field that require employees to work fewer hours than a standard full-time schedule, typically less than 35-40 hours per week. These roles can include positions such as paralegals, legal assistants, junior lawyers, or administrative staff in law firms, corporate legal departments, or government agencies. Part-time legal jobs offer flexibility for those balancing other commitments, such as education or family, while still providing valuable experience in the legal sector.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time legal assistant?

To thrive as a Part-Time Legal Assistant, you generally need a foundational understanding of legal terminology, document preparation, and office administration, often supported by an associate's degree or relevant coursework. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management software, and document management systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications help ensure efficient legal support, minimize errors, and contribute to the smooth functioning of legal teams.

How does working in a part-time legal role typically impact opportunities for professional development and career advancement?

In a part-time legal position, you may encounter fewer formal training programs or mentoring opportunities compared to full-time roles, but many firms still encourage skill development through project-based work and continuing legal education. Part-time legal professionals often work closely with senior attorneys, gaining exposure to a variety of cases, which can broaden your experience and network. While advancement to partnership or senior roles may be less common on a part-time schedule, consistent high performance and flexibility can lead to growth opportunities, especially in firms that value work-life balance. It's important to communicate your career goals with your employer to identify pathways for progression.

Job description

Legal Assistant – Estate Planning

Location: Garner, NC | Part-Time to Start | In-Office

Help Make an Important Legal Process Feel a Little Easier

Estate planning is about more than documents. It is about helping individuals and families prepare for the future, protect the people they care about, and gain peace of mind.

We are seeking a Legal Assistant to join a growing estate planning firm in Garner, North Carolina. This position will begin part-time, making it an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to build their legal experience, return to the workforce, or find a professional role where their organizational and people skills truly matter.

The right person doesn't simply complete tasks. They notice details, anticipate needs, communicate with care, and understand that every client interaction contributes to the experience someone has with the firm.

What You'll Do

As the Legal Assistant, you will help keep attorneys, clients, documents, and deadlines organized while supporting the day-to-day operations of the firm.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Serving as a welcoming and professional point of contact for clients

  • Answering phones, responding to emails, and assisting with general client communications

  • Scheduling client consultations, document-signing appointments, and attorney meetings

  • Preparing, organizing, proofreading, and maintaining estate planning documents and client files

  • Assisting with wills, trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and related estate planning matters

  • Gathering information and documentation from clients

  • Maintaining accurate electronic and physical client files

  • Tracking deadlines, follow-up items, and outstanding client information

  • Preparing correspondence and routine legal documents under attorney direction

  • Coordinating document execution and ensuring files are complete and properly organized

  • Updating client and matter information within the firm's case or practice management system

  • Assisting with billing, invoicing, or other administrative functions as needed

  • Maintaining strict confidentiality regarding client and firm information

  • Identifying opportunities to improve organization, workflow, and the overall client experience

What Will Make You Successful

We're looking for someone who brings a combination of organization, professionalism, initiative, and genuine care for people.

You may be a strong fit if you:

  • Have prior experience in a law firm, professional services firm, or administrative support role

  • Are highly organized and comfortable managing multiple priorities

  • Pay close attention to details and take pride in producing accurate work

  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients

  • Are comfortable working with individuals who may be discussing sensitive family, financial, or end-of-life matters

  • Can work independently while also collaborating closely with an attorney

  • Follow through on commitments without needing constant reminders

  • Are comfortable learning new technology and legal practice management systems

  • Understand the importance of discretion and confidentiality

  • Look for solutions rather than waiting to be told what to do next

Prior estate planning experience is valuable, but the right combination of legal experience, administrative ability, and willingness to learn will also be considered.

The Opportunity

This position will start part-time, with the opportunity to become an important part of the firm's continued growth.

Rather than stepping into a role where "this is how we've always done it," you'll have the opportunity to contribute to how the firm operates, communicates with clients, and creates an exceptional experience from the first phone call through the completion of an estate plan.

For the right person, this is an opportunity to build expertise in estate planning while working in an environment where quality, relationships, and thoughtful service matter.

Why This Role Matters

Clients may not remember every legal term contained in their documents, but they will remember whether they felt heard, respected, informed, and cared for throughout the process.

That's where you come in.

If you're someone who enjoys bringing order to details, helping people feel comfortable, and being the person a team can count on to keep things moving, we'd welcome the opportunity to learn more about you.

Location: Garner, North Carolina
Schedule: Part-time to start
Work Environment: In-office
