What is a remote paralegal internship?

A remote paralegal internship is an entry-level position where interns assist attorneys and legal teams with research, drafting documents, and case management tasks, all while working from a remote location such as their home. This arrangement allows interns to gain valuable legal experience and skills without needing to be physically present at a law office or firm. Remote paralegal internships typically involve using digital tools for communication and document sharing, making them accessible to candidates nationwide. These positions are ideal for students or recent graduates looking to explore a paralegal career and build their resumes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote paralegal intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Paralegal Intern, you need strong legal research, writing, and organizational skills, typically supported by coursework in paralegal studies or a related field. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), document management systems, and remote collaboration tools is essential. Attention to detail, time management, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this position. These abilities are crucial for efficiently supporting attorneys, maintaining accuracy, and ensuring seamless workflow in a virtual legal environment.

What are the main challenges faced during a remote paralegal internship, and how can I overcome them?

One of the main challenges in a remote paralegal internship is effective communication and collaboration with attorneys and team members, since you won't have in-person interactions. Staying organized and proactively reaching out through email or project management tools can help bridge this gap. Additionally, managing multiple assignments independently requires strong time management skills. Regular check-ins with your supervisor and keeping detailed records of your tasks can help ensure you stay on track and receive the guidance you need.

Job description

Are you a paralegal who thrives on getting things done while making every client feel cared for? We're reinventing our approach to personal injury cases and looking for the best of the best to join our high-performance pre-litigation team.

At our firm, paralegals are deeply valued and play a central role in helping us achieve justice for injured people.

Who We Are

We're one of the largest and fastest-growing personal injury firms in North Carolina, recently named the Triangle's Best Large Company to Work For. Forty percent of our team has been with us more than five years - and we're looking for people with the character, values, and drive to keep that culture going.

What We Offer

  • Robust training, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities
  • State-of-the-art case management software - control your cases, rather than your cases controlling you
  • Monday-Friday schedule
  • Competitive salary and benefits, including paid family leave and 401(k) with match

What the Day Looks Like

You're the client's first point of contact - answering questions, actively providing updates, offering guidance through medical treatment, reviewing records, and keeping cases moving. You'll have the support and processes to succeed at every stage, but this isn't an order-taking role: you'll be expected to think critically and manage a high-volume caseload for a wide range of clients.

It's fast-paced and a strong fit for organized, driven paralegals who want to make an impact on clients' lives and help build a growing department.

What We're Looking For

  • At least one year of relevant legal experience (pre-litigation personal injury experience preferred)
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus, not required
  • Organized, decisive, and able to manage a high volume of work
  • Comfortable learning new software and systems
  • A genuine interest in providing "above and beyond" client service
  • Must work full-time, Monday-Friday, from our downtown Durham or Raleigh office (remote work not available for this role)

Candidates without legal experience will be considered for high-potential fit. Please include a cover letter explaining your interest and detailing relevant transferable skills.

"Paralegals are the backbone of our firm. They often drive our success and consistently help us get better results for our clients. I'd put our team up against anyone's."

- James S. Farrin
