Job description

Location: San Francisco Bay Area (on-site

About Us:
We are a small, growing food manufacturing company specializing in high-quality, organic, and specialty flatbreads. Our mission is to bring fresh, healthy, and sustainable products to our customers while maintaining strong supplier relationships and efficient operations.

Position Overview:
We are seeking a part-time Purchasing & Strategic Sourcing Specialist to support procurement, supplier management, and strategic sourcing initiatives. This role is ideal for a self-motivated professional with experience in sourcing, procurement, or supply chain management within the food industry.

Key Responsibilities:

Purchasing:

  • Source, evaluate, and negotiate with suppliers for raw materials, ingredients, packaging, and MRO (maintenance, repair, operations) supplies
  • Issue and manage purchase orders, ensuring accuracy in pricing, quantities, and delivery timelines
  • Monitor supplier performance for quality, cost, and on-time delivery; resolve discrepancies or non-conformances
  • Maintain and update approved vendor lists and negotiate annual contracts/pricing agreements
  • Track market trends and commodity pricing to anticipate cost fluctuations and support budget planning
  • Ensure all purchased materials meet food safety, quality, and regulatory requirements (e.g., HACCP, FSMA, allergen controls)

Logistics:

  • Coordinate inbound shipments of raw materials and outbound distribution of finished products
  • Schedule and manage relationships with carriers, freight brokers, and third-party logistics providers
  • Optimize shipping routes and methods to control freight costs and meet delivery deadlines
  • Maintain accurate shipping/receiving documentation (BOLs, customs paperwork, certificates of analysis, etc.)
  • Coordinate with warehouse staff to ensure proper storage, rotation (FIFO/FEFO), and handling of perishable goods

Inventory & Planning:

  • Monitor inventory levels and reorder points to prevent stockouts or overstock situations
  • Actively manage warehouse inventory with the understanding that stock represents tied-up capital; minimize excess and obsolete inventory to optimize cash flow
  • Implement and maintain just-in-time (JIT) inventory planning practices, coordinating closely with production schedules to ensure materials arrive as needed rather than sitting in storage
  • Collaborate with production planning to align purchasing schedules with manufacturing needs
  • Conduct periodic cycle counts and support annual physical inventory
  • Identify and report slow-moving, expiring, or obsolete inventory
  • Analyze inventory turnover and carrying costs to inform purchasing decisions and reduce working capital tied up in stock

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with Production, Quality Assurance, and Finance teams to align supply chain activities with business goals
  • Support new product launches by coordinating timely procurement of new ingredients/packaging
  • Assist in supplier audits and traceability/recall exercises as needed

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in purchasing, procurement, or strategic sourcing, preferably in the food industry.
  • Knowledge of supplier management, contract negotiation, and procurement best practices.
  • Understanding of food safety regulations, certifications, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with ERP systems and inventory management is preferred.

Work Schedule:

  • Part-time (25-30 hours/week)

Compensation:

  • Competitive hourly rate based on experience.

Why Join Us:

  • Opportunity to contribute to a growing, mission-driven food company.
  • Work closely with a collaborative, passionate team.
  • Gain hands-on experience in all aspects of procurement and sourcing in the specialty food sector.
  • Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision
  • Paid Holidays
  • PTO (Vacation and Sick)
