How much do part 135 jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for part 135 in the United States is $81,863.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $60,000.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Part 135 vs Part 91?

AspectPart 135Part 91
Certifications & RequirementsRequires specific FAA certification, pilot qualifications, and operational approvalNo specific FAA certification; general operating rules apply
Work EnvironmentOn-demand charter flights, air taxi servicesPrivate, recreational, or business flights without commercial operation constraints
Usage & IndustryCommercial air transportation, charter servicesPrivate flying, personal use, non-commercial activities

Part 135 involves commercial air transportation with strict FAA regulations, requiring specific certifications and operational standards. In contrast, Part 91 covers private and recreational flying with fewer regulatory requirements. The key difference lies in the commercial intent and regulatory oversight, making Part 135 suitable for charter operators and Part 91 for private pilots.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part 135 pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part 135 pilot, you need an FAA commercial pilot certificate, instrument rating, and relevant flight hours, with strong knowledge of aviation regulations and procedures. Familiarity with aircraft navigation systems, weather tracking tools, and company-specific scheduling or safety management systems is essential. Excellent decision-making, situational awareness, and communication skills help pilots manage dynamic situations and ensure passenger safety. These skills and qualifications are crucial for maintaining regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and safe transport under sometimes challenging conditions.

What are Part 135 operators?

Part 135 operators are aviation companies or individuals authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct commercial on-demand and commuter operations. These operations typically include charter flights, air taxi services, and some cargo flights. Part 135 regulations set standards for pilot qualifications, aircraft maintenance, operational procedures, and safety to ensure a higher level of oversight than private (Part 91) operations. Operators must obtain and maintain a Part 135 certificate from the FAA and comply with all related rules to legally provide these services.

What are the unique challenges pilots face when flying under Part 135 operations compared to other types of commercial flying?

Pilots flying under Part 135 operations often encounter unique challenges such as varied flight schedules, operating into smaller or remote airports, and handling a wider range of weather and operational conditions. Unlike scheduled airline operations, Part 135 flights can be on-demand, requiring flexibility and strong situational awareness. Collaboration with dispatchers, ground crew, and maintenance personnel is essential to ensure safe and timely service. Additionally, pilots must stay current with specific regulatory requirements and may be tasked with more hands-on pre-flight and post-flight responsibilities.
