What is a PACS RIS job?
A PACS RIS job involves managing medical imaging systems in healthcare settings. PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and RIS (Radiology Information System) are used to store, retrieve, and distribute medical images and patient data. Professionals in this role ensure system functionality, troubleshoot technical issues, and support radiologists and healthcare staff. They may also assist with system integration, data security, and workflow optimization to improve efficiency in medical imaging departments.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the PACS RIS position?
To excel in a PACS/RIS role, candidates need a comprehensive understanding of medical imaging informatics, information technology, and clinical workflow, often supported by a degree in health informatics, IT, or radiologic technology. Proficiency with Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), Radiology Information Systems (RIS), and related DICOM and HL7 standards, along with vendor-specific certifications, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help professionals effectively support clinicians and resolve technical or workflow issues. These skills are essential because they ensure the reliability and efficiency of radiology imaging systems, ultimately supporting patient care and clinical operations.

- Configure and maintain workflow orchestration platforms, business rules, and operational workflows aligned with organizational objectives and best practices.
- Monitor workflow performance and operational outcomes, proactively identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce exceptions, optimize resource utilization, and enhance customer service.
Application Engineering & Systems Integration
Lead the planning, design, implementation, and support of workflow orchestration technologies and related clinical imaging applications, including PACS, RIS, voice recognition, and ancillary systems.
Design and support integrations between workflow orchestration platforms and enterprise systems including PACS, RIS, physician scheduling, analytics platforms, productivity systems, and other clinical applications.
Gather and translate business, clinical, and technical requirements into system configurations, workflow designs, functional specifications, and implementation plans.
Serve as the escalation point for complex workflow, integration, and application issues, coordinating with internal teams and vendors to drive resolution.
Project Delivery & Enterprise Transformation
- Lead and support strategic initiatives involving workflow optimization, automation, standardization, acquisitions, system consolidations, and enterprise transformation projects.
- Collaborate with project managers, technical teams, infrastructure teams, vendors, and business stakeholders throughout the full project lifecycle, including planning, architecture, configuration, testing, deployment, stabilization, and operational transition.

- Partner with Data & Analytics teams and operational leaders to ensure the integrity, consistency, and accuracy of workflow metrics, productivity reporting, operational dashboards, and performance analytics.
- Analyze workflow and operational data to identify trends, bottlenecks, and opportunities for process improvement.
- Support organizational efforts to improve physician productivity, quality, operational performance, and customer satisfaction through data-driven decision making.
Training & Knowledge Transfer
- Develop and deliver training programs, user guides, workflow documentation, and reference materials for radiologists, technologists, operations leaders, and support teams.
- Provide subject matter expertise and end-user support during implementations, upgrades, and optimization initiatives.
- Ensure effective knowledge transfer to operational and support teams following project completion.
Testing & Quality Assurance
- Develop and execute comprehensive testing strategies, including functional, integration, interface, regression, performance, and user acceptance testing.
- Coordinate testing activities and validate system readiness for production deployment.
- Support post-implementation validation and stabilization activities to ensure successful adoption and operational performance.
Qualifications
Experience
