What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Online Research Methods Instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Online Research Methods Instructor, you need expertise in research methodology, instructional design, and a relevant academic background such as a master's or doctorate. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), online survey tools, and data analysis software like SPSS or R is typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and the ability to engage and motivate remote learners are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure effective delivery of complex content, student engagement, and successful learning outcomes in an online environment.

What are some common challenges faced when teaching online research methods, and how can instructors effectively address them?

A common challenge for Online Research Methods Instructors is ensuring student engagement and comprehension in a virtual environment, especially when teaching complex methodologies and analytical tools. Instructors can address this by integrating interactive elements such as live demonstrations, discussion forums, and practical assignments that simulate real-world research processes. Regular feedback and virtual office hours also help foster a supportive learning environment, enabling students to ask questions and clarify concepts. Collaborating with teaching assistants or other faculty members can further enhance support for students and improve the overall course experience.

What does an Online Research Methods Instructor do?

An Online Research Methods Instructor teaches students how to design, conduct, and analyze research projects using various methodologies, often within an online learning environment. They develop course materials, lead virtual lectures or discussions, and assess student progress. Their role includes providing feedback on research proposals, guiding students through ethical considerations, and ensuring students understand both quantitative and qualitative research techniques. These instructors may teach at universities, colleges, or through online education platforms.

Job Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for an Instructor position in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. The Instructor will be expected to decode cell types and circuit mechanisms underlying chronic pain and its modulation by opioids. The main research focuses on synaptic and neural circuit mechanisms underlying chronic pain, chronic pain-induced mood disorders, and opioid analgesic tolerance and addiction by combining a range of cutting-edge techniques including mouse genetics, Patch-seq, in vivo recording of neural activity, optogenetic/chemogenetic tools, viral vector manipulation, electrophysiological recording, confocal imaging, and behavior. Recent achievements include identifying the novel synaptic mechanisms underlying the development of neuropathic pain and gabapentin therapeutic actions (Cell Reports, 2016, 2018, 2021), identifying the synaptic mechanism underlying comorbid depression-like and ketamine antidepressant-like actions in chronic pain (J Clin Invest, 2022), identifying the pathophysiological mechanism underlining neuropathic pain (Neuron, 2023), and uncovering the neural substance for morphine analgesic tolerance (In submission). Current lab research funding comes from R01s, R21s, DoDs, and a generous UAB startup package. For more details, please refer to (https://www.uab.edu/medicine/anesthesiology/research/labs/li-lab). The ideal candidate with over 3 years of post-doctoral fellowship and a strong background in slice patch-clamp recording, optogenetic manipulation, and/or in vivo calcium imaging will be helpful. Interested candidates, please forward your curriculum vitae to Dr. Lingyong Li by email: lingyongli@uabmc.edu. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
