About the Department

The Enrico Fermi Institute is an interdisciplinary research unit within the Division of Physical Sciences of the University of Chicago. The Institute's activities include the following: string theory and theoretical high-energy physics, experimental high-energy physics, theoretical astrophysics and cosmology, experimental particle astrophysics, infrared and optical astronomy, cosmic microwave background observations, general relativity and gravitational waves, and cosmochemistry.


Job Summary

The CERN Technologist job involves performing routine assignments related to engineering activities to establish operating data and conduct experimental tests for assigned functions or departments within the University. Designs modifies and tests electronic systems and equipment. Confers with management to determine engineering feasibility and cost-effectiveness. Requires knowledge and experience in own discipline while acquiring higher-level knowledge and skills.
This is a one-year position from June 19, 2026, through August 1, 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes data from the calorimeter section of the detector which is acquired from 20,000 analog readout channels. The analysis helps to determine the calibration constants of each channel as well as the proper operation over the full dynamic range of signal amplitudes
  • Responsible for monitoring and updating calibration analysis on a weekly basis and diagnosing anomalies
  • Works with electronics, power supplies, mechanical systems, and if needed, control software, to Study Test Systems. A unique laboratory has been set up with a slice of the operational detector. This system is used to track stability, understand anomalies, and test new software and hardware techniques
  • Works with the maintenance team to repair any readout channels with faulty behavior on the ATLAS detector when it is taken off-line
  • Has limited authority on construction, installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and development of new, modified, and existing systems and of electric or electronic components, equipment, systems, etc
  • Analyzes equipment to establish operating data and conduct experimental tests
  • Performs development activities, including drawing board layout and interpretation and implementation of project specifications and documentation requirements. Provides drafting and design services by preparing and maintaining blueprints, maps and engineering, architectural, or electrical drawings
  • Performs other related work as needed


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Physics
  • Satisfactory completion of an experimental physics lab course

Experience:

  • Exposure to moving machinery
  • Work with computer systems and writing computer code
  • Work with complex instruments in a physics laboratory

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Coding experience with Python and C++ in Linux systems
