Job description

Cafeteria Monitors Wanted

Greenwich Public Schools seeks cafeteria monitors for several K-5 elementary schools. Under the supervision of the school administration, cafeteria monitors manage student behavior during lunchtime. Cafeteria monitors work daily from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and are compensated at the rate of $17.00/hr. for the first 4 years of service, and $17.15/hr. thereafter.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Maintain order in the student lunch line
  • Assist students in choosing food and supervising traffic flow to keep the lunch line moving smoothly
  • Supervise student behavior
  • Assist students in opening juice containers, milk containers, etc.
  • Maintain sanitary health standards in the cafeteria, including cleaning off tables and chairs between lunch periods, wiping tables with sanitizing solutions, and monitoring garbage disposal
  • Assist in selling milk and/or snacks, and in restocking condiments and napkins, when possible
  • Perform related work as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to interact pleasantly but firmly with children
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions in English
  • Ability to read, understand and explain to children the daily menu and prices
  • Ability to learn, understand, and monitor compliance with basic federal, state and local requirements followed by students participating in the National School Lunch Program of the Greenwich Public Schools
  • Ability to make minor decisions according to federal state and local laws and regulations and established school and department policies
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees, school staff, students, and the general public

Qualifications Profile:

  • Must be free from communicable diseases
  • Must be able to stand and walk for the duration of the work shift
  • Must be able to clean up spills on tables and chairs ranging in height from 12" to 36" from the floor
  • Must be able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions in English
