Director of Children's & Youth Ministries - Barrington United Methodist Church

Summary of Position

The Barrington United Methodist Church Director of Children and Youth Ministries is a servant leader, supporting the mission and vision of the church through the development and implementation of ministries, classes, programs and events that introduce children to their identity as children of God, that bring children, youth, and their families into relationship with one another and as the family of God, and that support the faith development of children from birth through young adult.

This is a part-time, exempt position reporting to the Sr. Pastor - approximately 20-25 hours per week; Sundays and Christian holidays required, as well as some evenings and weekends.

Position Responsibilities

The Director of Children & Youth Ministries works with staff and ministry areas to meet the needs and guide the spiritual growth of children, youth and their families from birth through young adult.

* Understands and supports the vision of church leadership and aligns programming with the BUMC mission, vision, and values.

* Prepares and manages an annual budget, providing documentation and receipts for all expenditures.

* Supervises the Children’s Ministry Assistant and Family Event Coordinator(s).

* Attends staff meetings, church leadership meetings, and other meetings as deemed necessary.

* Works to ensure programming provides a cohesive, cradle to college program.

* Develops, implements and oversees Sunday morning programming for children through high school, which includes planning themes for the year, decorating the room and preparing all crafts and lessons.

* Selects, develops and/or writes curriculum for children / youth that is age appropriate and in alignment with United Methodist theology.

* Incorporates best faith formation practices across the age and program continuum.

* Creates a safe environment for all children and youth who attend any ministry function through Barrington United Methodist Church, and takes appropriate actions to protect them from harm, including but not limited to follow the Safe Sanctuary Policy adopted by Barrington United Methodist Church.

* Supervises, schedules and trains BUMC staff and volunteers that work with children and youth. Provides, updates and maintains Safe Gatherings training and background checks for all Staff and Volunteers.

* Effectively invites, engages and manages volunteers, equipping them to serve in ways that merge their passions, skills, and strengths with the needs of the church.

* Develops and implements a nurturing environment in the nursery for infants and toddlers and their families.

* Develops, implements, and oversees family events; event programming for tweens (3rd – 5th grade); event programming for Youth (6th -12th grade). Plan Group Events and age appropriate activities for all children, youth and young adults. This entails planning, shopping, decorating, setting up, running the event, clean up and tear down.

* Leads the Confirmation program for Barrington United Methodist Church under the direction of the Senior Pastor, and follows the guidelines outlined by the United Methodist Church.

* Implements, creates and oversees annual Vacation Bible School as a faith development, community building and evangelism opportunity for the children and families. This event entails: planning, organizing and decorating areas used throughout the church, preparing all materials, training volunteers, and set up / clean up each day.

* Encourages and supports children and youth to participate in all facets of the community of faith at Barrington United Methodist Church, including but not limited to worship, Sunday School, Bible studies, family and youth activities, service projects, music programs, the acolyte program and ushering, etc.

* Maintains open lines of communication with Pastoral staff to communicate pastoral care concerns and needs of children, youth and families.

* Be an integral part of the worshiping community of Barrington United Methodist Church.

Qualifications

Previous experience in education

Able to pass a thorough background check

Safe Sanctuaries certification within 3 months of employment

Computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, Canva

Self-motivated, creative, energetic; strong organizational skills

Ability to attract and lead volunteers

Experience planning and leading short-term mission trips strongly desired

Must be Christian and have a growing faith through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Have, or be willing to gain education in Methodist Theology from the United Methodist Church

Education

Bachelor’s Degree - preferably in Christian Education, Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education; or extensive related experience
