HOW THIS POSITION CONTRIBUTES TO WHAT WE DO

The Organist/Accompanist plays music to help create an inviting and irresistible worship experience and support those leading worship in song.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Organist/Accompanist is an integral part of the Worship Team, as well as the total ministry program at Aldersgate UMC. The position is responsible for accompanying the Choirs, soloists, and the congregation in worshiping God through music. The Organist/Accompanist demonstrates strong Christian commitment, high standards in attitude, outlook and morals, with awareness of the importance of Christian example.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide musical preludes, postludes, solos and accompaniment for regularly scheduled Sunday services and special worship services, including Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas Eve
  2. Provide accompaniment for Chancel Choir for weekly rehearsals and extra rehearsals when appropriate for major performances.
  3. Provide accompaniment for and rehearse with soloists.
  4. Collaborate with the Music Ministries Director and Senior Pastor to provide worship music and arrangements.
  5. Coordinate with Music Ministries Director for a replacement when absent.
  6. May be requested to provide accompaniment at funerals, weddings and other special services.

CRITICAL SKILLS

  1. Ability to accompany choirs, soloists and congregation via piano and/or organ.
  2. Thorough knowledge of music, particularly choral, church praise and worship music.
  3. Strong interpersonal communication skills
  4. Ability to work cooperatively with various church stakeholders, including staff and other members of the congregation (adults, youth and children).
  5. Ability to be prompt and maintain awareness of time in relationship to total worship services.
  6. Sensitivity to confidential matters of the church

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Prior Organist/Accompanist experience
  2. Music or music education required
  3. Knowledge of church music and church liturgy recommended
  4. Background in instrumental music is required
