Description

Summary Performs chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Conducts chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components
  • Studies and evaluates blood cells, their numbers, and morphology.
  • Performs blood group, type and compatibility testing for transfusion administration.
  • Analyzes test results and enters findings in LIS computer.
  • Performs quality control studies to ensure accuracy of clinical data.
  • Engages in medical research under direction of Lab supervisor or Lab director.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.
  • Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documents data.
  • Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment.
  • Trains and supervises students as needed.
  • Completes and documents all required training and competency annually according to COLA and CLIA guidelines.
  • Communicates all issues with laboratory workload, QC, personnel and students with Technical Supervisor.
  • Performs phlebotomy functions and non-technical duties in areas including the hospital laboratory, outpatient and off-site services to include assembling all equipment required.
  • Verifies or records identity of patient or donor by utilizing COLA and CLIA guidelines and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
  • Provides courier services as required for lab and outlying clinics, which includes ensuring your own transportation for pick-up and deliveries as required.
  • Must have a clean driving record.
  • Must have a working phone or pager to ensure that you're available for laboratory consultation when needed with all hospital and outlying clinic employees.
  • Ensures all COLA, CLIA, CMS, and Joint Commission standards are met.
  • Will adhere to guidelines set forth in the CMMC Standards of Excellence and Code of Conduct.
  • A valid Texas Driver's License is required, as the job duties include traveling to all CMMC campuses, as appropriate.

Education and/or Experience

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CPR certification preferred

MLT certification or equivalent eligibility under Medical Lab Technicians regulations
