What is a managing attorney?

A Managing Attorney is a senior lawyer who oversees the operations of a law firm or legal department. Their responsibilities typically include supervising other attorneys and staff, managing case assignments, ensuring compliance with legal regulations, and developing firm policies. They also often play a key role in business development, client relations, and financial management. The Managing Attorney ensures that legal services are delivered efficiently and ethically, while maintaining the quality and reputation of the practice.

What is a managing attorney?

A managing attorney is a partner at a law firm and oversees the daily operations of the business. As a managing attorney, your job duties include handling budgeting, scheduling, and hiring practices, as well as promoting relationships with clients and associates. At a smaller firm, you may also continue to maintain a caseload and handle trials and settlements. To pursue a career as a managing attorney, you typically need to complete law school, pass the state bar exam, and gain extensive legal experience as a practicing lawyer before you can move up to a management position. Additional qualifications include excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills, along with the ability to bring in clients and supervise employees.

What are some typical challenges a managing attorney faces when overseeing a legal team?

Managing Attorneys often encounter challenges such as balancing their own caseload with leadership responsibilities, ensuring effective communication among team members, and maintaining high standards of legal work under tight deadlines. They must also navigate differing personalities within the team, manage resource allocation, and handle conflicts or high-stress cases sensitively. Successfully addressing these challenges requires strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, as well as a commitment to mentoring junior attorneys and fostering a collaborative work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a managing attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Managing Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, extensive legal expertise, and experience in supervising legal teams. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management software, and compliance tools is typically required. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring legal accuracy, efficient workflow, and successful management of complex legal cases or departments.

Job description

Eric Buchanan & Associates is a small, team-oriented plaintiffs' firm located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Our core values are to ethically take care of our clients, aggressively pursue our client's cases, and take care of each other, and after those goals are met, to provide a good living for our employees. Our boutique firm focuses on the narrow practice areas of helping individuals obtain disability insurance benefits, ERISA employee welfare benefits (such as life, health, or disability benefits offered through work), and similar insurance benefits. Our practice area is intellectually challenging but a perfect fit for a motivated and talented attorney, especially an attorney who believes in an aggressive approach to litigation.
We are always seeking attorneys with some experience, preferably experience in plaintiff's civil litigation. We offer a well-established on-the-job training program to learn about our specific practice areas. Our attorneys have the opportunity to work directly with clients and appear in court early on. Our practice requires attention to detail, the ability to write well in court pleadings, the ability to manage time and tasks, as well as the ability to work well with people and be part of a successful team. The position offers a salary between $50,000 to $100,000 depending on experience and qualifications, as well as the opportunity for additional bonuses for case origination and successful resolution of cases.
Please submit your position-specific cover letter and resume in PDF format; other formats will not be considered.
