Job description

Location: Burns Harbor

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Maintenance Engineer at our Burns Harbor, Indiana operation. The Maintenance Engineer will be responsible for support to the operation through analysis of equipment health and recommending strategies to increase the time between overhauls. This role serves as a technical resource for planning, scheduling, and execution of mechanical maintenance. This position will be responsible for supporting plant reliability using knowledge of mechanical systems to troubleshoot and decrease lost opportunities.


Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering design and specifications for mechanical equipment and systems including but not limited to rotating equipment, piping systems, vessels, conveyors and other mechanical equipment.

  • Utilize various reliability tools in support of continuous improvement including leading or supporting key activities of the reliability program.

  • Establish Key Processing "Best Practices" to improve profitability, including; operating conditions, hardware change recommendations, monitoring process conditions, and unit performance reporting/comparison (benchmarking).

  • Evaluate existing system and component capabilities by analyzing data utilizing engineering software.

  • Review data from preventative maintenance activities and operations, monitoring those activities for effectiveness and if applicable, frequency, and making changes as necessary.

  • Utilizes appropriate failure analysis techniques to determine root causes of equipment failures and initiates necessary corrective action to eliminate/reduce such failures.

  • Assists in the planning of equipment outages, down turn repairs, and the establishment of maintenance shops; sets priorities to ensure timely, efficient repair/replacement of equipment. Assists in the establishments and assignment of preventive maintenance procedures for the proper care of equipment.

  • Works closely with Operations and Technical personnel to ensure that drawings are updated in keeping with equipment modifications; to provide counsel for equipment redesign; and, to secure information necessary for the performance of the position.

  • May provide day-to-day supervision of the Maintenance Technicians within assigned division.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (BS) from an accredited educational institution in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or related technical field or combination of education / experience.

  • Demonstrated equipment maintenance knowledge.

  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills and experience.

  • Experience using an electronic Maintenance Repair Software System, and Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to perform maintenance and reliability studies and / or FMEA for existing and proposed replacement equipment.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate efforts and work well with others.

  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least five (5) years of experience in the steel or metals industry.
