Job description

SCHEDULE: 8 hours per day, Monday-Friday, 190 days 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Receives direction from the Principal and Director of Media Services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Demonstrated ability to learn and effectively use Destiny Library Manager circulation software.
• Has working knowledge of the Internet with the ability to assist students with online research.
• Exhibits an enthusiasm for reading.
• Internal candidates must have successfully completed Clerical Basics & Skyward tests • External candidates - Successful passing of Clerical Basics & Skyward required within the probationary period
• Demonstrates proficiency of basic library skills by passing the library basic skills test.
• Successful interview with the Principal/Director of Media Services.
• Detail-oriented and organized. • Internal applicants must meet requirements to temporarily bump-up to this position.
• Completed at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher learning, passed the paraprofessional exam to become highly qualified and/or obtained an associates degree or higher and met one of the following requirements:
(1) Post elementary work in education or a related field;
(2) Previous work experience in instructional program documented by letter(s) of references;
(3) Previous experience as a classroom assistant documented by letter(s) of reference and description of responsibilities.
Preferred candidates will have met one of the following requirements:
• Post High School work in education or a related field;

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Facilitates learning with approximately 23 ECD - 4th Grade classes in book appreciation activities, digital citizenship, library research skills, maker space activities, coding, etc.
• Works with small groups of students in a learning capacity for RTI.
• Assists students in finding interesting books to read.
• Circulates books to students through the Destiny Library Manager program daily.
• Promotes reading with students and staff, using incentives and rewards as needed.
• Maintains grade-level Google Classrooms for the library.
• Collaborates with teachers in finding resources for the maker space area and restocks as needed.
• Sends out letters indicating overdue items weekly to parents and follows up on materials that are significantly overdue.
• Performs basic troubleshooting of AV equipment including the laminator, and assists staff with requests for batteries, lamps, and checks out available equipment.
• Promotes and maintains a professional library for staff.
• Notifies staff of new library materials through e-mail or staff meetings.
• Handles teachers' requests for media center books and other materials.
• Inventories the library books and materials yearly.
• Selects books and other materials for the library through book vendor meetings, magazine, and journal reviews.
• Types requisitions for orders and pays invoices in a timely manner.
• Readies new materials for shelving. • Maintains an up-to-date collection, weeding dated materials and books beyond repair.
• Repair books as needed.
• Prepares plans for substitutes when absent.
• Receives and schedules requests for use of the Media Center.
• Keep records needed for Media Center reports and send reports to the Principal/Director of Media Services.
• Ability to travel to other MCSC elementary libraries to substitute for absent library coordinators if needed
• Other duties related to the Library/Media Center as requested by the building Principal/Director of Media Services Merrillville Community
