These roles support the overall functioning of the library Focus on operations, technical support, and customer service to ensure the library operates efficiently and meets the needs of its patrons. Does not include Librarian jobs.
The University of Virginia Library invites applications for the Shannon Library Coordinator and Weekend Manager to support the Information Services and Spaces team. The Information Services and Spaces team provides our patrons with access to collections, resources, and spaces as well as high-quality service to support them.
This position works a Saturday-Wednesday schedule, providing needed evening and weekend coverage in Shannon Library. This role is the only staff member in Shannon Library on Saturdays and serves as the manager-on-duty on Saturdays and Sundays, from open until 6PM, and Monday through Wednesday, 11AM-7PM. While the weekend hours of this position are firm, the Monday through Wednesday hours are flexible depending on candidate preference.
Job Responsibilities:Weekend and Afternoon Building Management (50%)
- This position oversees Shannon Library operations on the weekends and afternoons Monday through Wednesday. Conducts preventative patrols with an eye towards building and patron safety. Contacts University Police and Facilities Management as needed, to ensure safety, security, and comfort of library patrons.
- Troubleshoots basic problems with computers, printing and copying services, and classroom audio/video, and reports unresolved issues to appropriate staff.
- Monitors student employee performance when working, and models expectations of customer service to student workers.
Circulation, Reference, and Customer Service (35%)
- Completes a variety of circulation tasks, including checking out library materials, answering questions about circulation policy and patron accounts, and answering email correspondence.
- Provides customer service to library patrons with identifying and using appropriate library resources and online data collections. Conducts catalog searches to identify library resources and locate materials.
- Performs quality-control work with in-transit and hold materials. Ensures important forms and documentation are readily available at two service desks.
Departmental Documentation and Special Duties (15%)
- Oversees Shannon Library's Graduate Student Lounge. Serves as liaison between graduate student groups on-grounds and the Library, and coordinates shelf reserves and lounge access.
- Maintains the online departmental repository of information and documentation pertaining to staff, processes, procedures, and guidelines.

Required Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year of experience in a library setting OR any combination of relevant education, training, or experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the job.
- Experience working with the public or in a customer service position.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear manner.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor's degree.
- A working understanding of library classification systems, like the Library of Congress Classification System.
- Experience using library catalogs and databases.
- Experience using integrated library systems and other library technology.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Experience working with student workers

Physical DemandsThe job requires ability to push a full book cart and lift up to 35 pounds. This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
Anticipated hiring range: $20 - $23/hour, commensurate with education and experience. Differential pay is received for work occurring during the evenings and on the weekend.
