How much do law jobs pay per year?

What are 'law' jobs?

Law jobs encompass a wide range of professions related to the legal system, including roles such as lawyers, paralegals, judges, legal assistants, and legal researchers. These professionals are responsible for interpreting laws, representing clients in legal matters, providing legal advice, and ensuring justice is served. Law jobs can be found in private law firms, government agencies, corporations, and non-profit organizations. The field requires strong analytical, research, and communication skills, and typically a law degree or related certification.

What Are the Qualifications to Get a Job in Law?

The qualifications to get a job in law vary considerably. To work in law enforcement, you typically need a high school diploma or GED certificate and need to complete academy training. Advancement comes with years of experience or by returning to study criminal justice or a closely related field. Lawyers, law professors, and legal scholars need to complete law school, and scholars often have a Ph.D. in history or law as well. It is common for lawmakers to have a law degree, but many legislators come from different backgrounds, such as medicine, business, public policy, or community advocacy. Important skills include strong analytical thinking and interpersonal communication.

What are common challenges new lawyers face when transitioning from law school to practicing in a firm or organization?

New lawyers often find the transition from law school to practice challenging due to the shift from academic theory to real-world application. They must quickly adapt to managing multiple cases, meeting tight deadlines, and navigating complex client relationships. Additionally, understanding firm protocols, billing practices, and courtroom procedures can require significant on-the-job learning. Mentorship and proactive communication with colleagues are key to overcoming these challenges and building confidence in the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lawyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lawyer, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, strong analytical skills, and a deep understanding of legal principles, typically supported by passing the bar exam. Familiarity with legal research tools like Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in case management software are commonly required. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and critical thinking skills set top lawyers apart. These abilities are crucial for effective client representation, sound legal strategy, and success in complex legal environments.

What is the difference between Law vs Paralegal?

AspectLawParalegal
Required CredentialsJurisdictions require a law degree and passing the bar examTypically requires a paralegal certificate or associate degree
Work EnvironmentWorks in law firms, courts, or corporate legal departmentsSupports lawyers in law firms, legal departments, or government agencies
Job ResponsibilitiesProvides legal advice, represents clients, and handles court proceedingsPrepares legal documents, conducts research, and assists lawyers
Industry UsageLicensed to practice law and offer legal servicesSupports legal professionals but cannot practice law independently

Lawyers and paralegals work closely within the legal industry, but lawyers have a higher level of education, licensing, and responsibility. Paralegals assist lawyers with case preparation and research, while lawyers provide legal advice and representation. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and expectations in the legal field.

Job description

Join a Bold, Client-First Team of Attorneys in Grand Rapids

Are you ready to love what you do, thrive in the courtroom, and work with a great team and mentor?

At Kraayeveld Family Law, we’re a respected, litigation-focused firm in Grand Rapids looking to add an attorney to our growing team. Whether you’re an early-career litigator or an experienced family law attorney, we provide unmatched training, competitive compensation, and a collaborative team that supports your success.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • $80,000–$120,000+ annual earnings (base + bonuses) with clear paths to exceed the $120,000 earnings early on in your career based on performance. We expect our attorneys to earn in excess of $100,000 in their second year with the firm, even when they are recent law school graduates.
  • Excellent training program. We have an open-door policy to get help and training to become the best attorney possible.
  • After training, quarterly bonuses and profit sharing are directly tied to the collections of your fees.
  • Partially remote schedule after the training period, with flexibility and respect for your personal life.
  • No weekly evening or weekend work expectations unless you prefer to work those hours or you have a trial scheduled.
  • Dedicated billing & intake team — so you can focus on law, not logistics.
  • Participation in a robust training program for courtroom skills, client management, and family law practice.
  • Fun, supportive culture with Friday “Wine Down” meetings and a focus on camaraderie.

Compensation:

$80,000 - $120,000

Responsibilities:

What You’ll Do

  • Represent clients in family law matters, including divorce, custody, parenting time, support, post-judgment issues, grandparenting rights, and appellate work.
  • Handle your own full caseload and manage client relationships with empathy and strategy.
  • Appear regularly in court; attend mediations and depositions, and take ownership of litigation from day one (with mentorship and support as needed).
  • We take cases to trial, and you should be willing to do so.
  • Draft motions, pleadings, and legal arguments at a high level.
  • Some of our attorneys handle appellate work, and we have an option for a position to grow into a full-time appellate position.

Expectations & Requirements

  • Minimum: 110 billable hours per month (1,300–1,400 annually) with bonus tiers for performance. If you want to earn more and work more, that's an option.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in family law litigation.
  • Willingness to grow with us and support our Core Values: Bold Battles, Blunt Truths, Boundless Dedication, Bigger Giving, and Better Together.
  • To find out about our Core Values, please visit our website at www.kraayeveld.com and watch our video.

Qualifications:

Who You Are

  • A licensed Michigan attorney.
  • A strong writer and persuasive speaker with excellent communication skills.
  • Goal-oriented with the grit to advocate for clients during court hearings and negotiations. You must exhibit tenacity to engage in Bold Battles.
  • Empathy to help clients through difficult times, but also be able and willing to share Blunt Truths with clients.
  • A team player who supports and uplifts others — we’re Better Together.
