What is a junior developer?

A Junior Developer is an entry-level software professional who assists in creating, testing, and maintaining software applications. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced developers, learning best practices and acquiring new technical skills on the job. Junior Developers are expected to write code, fix bugs, and contribute to project documentation while gradually gaining experience in software development processes. This role is ideal for recent graduates or individuals transitioning into the tech industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, basic knowledge of software development life cycles, and ideally a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java, as well as version control systems such as Git, is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help you integrate into teams and adapt to new challenges. These skills are crucial for producing quality code, collaborating with colleagues, and growing within the fast-paced tech environment.

What are some common challenges faced by junior developers during their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Developers often face challenges such as adapting to new codebases, understanding company workflows, and bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world applications. It’s common to feel overwhelmed by unfamiliar technologies or debugging complex issues. Overcoming these challenges involves proactively seeking mentorship, participating in code reviews, and consistently asking questions to clarify concepts. We're partnering with a highly respected financial services organization to hire a Lead Software Developer who will help shape the future of enterprise applications while mentoring developers and driving technical excellence. This is more than just a senior development role.

You'll serve as a technical leader, influence architectural decisions, mentor junior developers, and play a key role in designing and supporting business-critical applications that impact the organization every day. What You'll Be Doing As a Lead Software Developer, you'll partner with architects, developers, and business stakeholders to build scalable, secure, and reliable enterprise solutions. You'll lead by example, helping the team solve complex technical challenges while remaining actively involved in development.

Responsibilities include: Lead the design, development, and enhancement of enterprise applications and integrations. Architect secure, scalable solutions using modern Java technologies and microservices. Mentor and coach junior developers while promoting development best practices.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software solutions. Support and enhance critical third-party business applications and ensure seamless integration with internal systems. Develop and maintain RESTful APIs and enterprise integrations.

Participate in production support through a rotating on-call schedule, helping resolve issues and improve system reliability. Continuously identify opportunities to modernize applications, improve processes, and drive technical innovation. What We're Looking For We're looking for someone who enjoys taking ownership, solving difficult problems, and helping others grow.

The ideal candidate is a strong technical leader who isn't afraid to challenge the status quo and continuously learn new technologies. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field with 7+ years of experience (or 10+ years of equivalent professional experience). Strong technical leadership with experience in application architecture and solution design.

Extensive experience with Java, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and JPA/Hibernate. Experience building microservices and integrating applications through APIs and message queues. Experience with SQL, Angular, TypeScript, Node.js, HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap

Strong understanding of object-oriented design, software architecture, design patterns, and test-driven development. Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and release management. Experience working within Agile, Scrum, or similar software development methodologies.

Experience with infrastructure automation and tools such as GitLab. Preferred Experience Financial services industry experience. Experience supporting production applications in an on-call environment.

Experience supporting third-party financial platforms such as SimCorp, Principia, MarkitWire, or similar enterprise applications. What Makes You Successful You naturally take initiative and aren't afraid to tackle unfamiliar technologies. You enjoy mentoring developers and helping elevate the entire team.

You think strategically while remaining hands-on with development. You communicate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders. You continuously look for opportunities to improve applications, processes, and team performance.

Why You'll Love This Opportunity Technical leadership role with significant influence on architecture and application strategy. Modern technology stack including Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, REST APIs, Angular, and GitLab. Collaborative engineering culture that values innovation and continuous learning.

Competitive compensation of $102,000-$121,000 plus a 15% annual incentive target based on organizational performance. Hybrid work schedule with four days in the office and one remote day each week. Opportunity to mentor developers while remaining deeply involved in technical design and software engineering.

If you're looking for an opportunity where you can lead, mentor, architect, and still enjoy writing great code, we'd love to connect with you. Apply today or reach out directly for a confidential conversation.
