Job description

Summary:
The City of Lawrence is seeking a strategic and service-driven Supervising City Prosecutor to join the City Attorney's Office. This leadership position offers the opportunity to guide municipal prosecution efforts, mentor legal staff, and contribute to a fair, effective, and community-centered justice system.
As a key member of the City Attorney's Office, you will lead prosecution efforts, advise law enforcement and City departments, and play an active role in shaping practices that promote a safe, fair, and well-functioning community.
Responsibilities:
In this position, you will:
  • Lead the prosecution of misdemeanor cases on behalf of the City, ensuring fair and consistent case resolution
  • Supervise and develop prosecutors, support staff, and interns-setting clear expectations, coaching performance, and building a collaborative, high-functioning team.
  • Serve as a trusted legal advisor to law enforcement and City departments, offering practical guidance on municipal criminal law and procedures.
  • Research complex legal issues and deliver clear, well-reasoned opinions and guidance to support City operations.
  • Draft and review legal documents that support effective municipal court operations and prosecution efforts.
  • Collaborate with the City Attorney on legal strategy, ordinance updates, and prosecution practices

We're looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, communicates clearly and confidently, and brings strong legal knowledge, sound judgment, and a commitment to public service. The ideal candidate can analyze complex issues, present arguments effectively, and build positive working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
Qualifications:
We're looking for someone who brings:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active Kansas law license in good standing
  • At least two years of criminal prosecution experience
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
  • The ability to communicate legal concepts clearly and effectively to non-legal audiences
  • Comfort managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment

Preferred: Experience in municipal or public-sector prosecution and supervising or mentoring legal staff and experience in municipal or public-sector prosecution.
