We are seeking an Instructional Designer for our Epic team.

The Epic Instructional Designer (ID) is responsible for the design, development, delivery, and continuous improvement of Epic electronic medical record (EMR) training programs that support clinical, operational, and administrative workflows across the organization.

This role partners closely with Epic application teams, clinical and operational subject matter experts (SMEs), and organizational leaders to translate Epic system build, workflows, and upgrades into engaging, effective, and measurable learning solutions.

The Epic Instructional Designer functions as both a learning strategist and Epic application training expert, ensuring end users are prepared to use Epic accurately, efficiently, and in alignment with patient care, safety, regulatory, and operational goals.

Responsibilities

Instructional Design & Curriculum Development

  • Conduct comprehensive training needs analyses for Epic implementations, upgrades, optimizations, and workflow changes.
  • Define measurable learning objectives aligned with clinical, operational, regulatory, and organizational requirements.
  • Design and maintain rolebased curricula for clinical, revenue cycle, administrative, and ancillary staff.
  • Apply adult learning theory and instructional design methodologies to develop effective learning experiences.
  • Develop instructorled, virtual, blended, and elearning courses.
  • Create realistic case scenarios, simulations, and handson practice exercises using Epic training environments.
  • Maintain and update all training materials to reflect system and workflow changes.

Epic Application & Workflow Expertise

  • Achieve and maintain proficiency and/or certification in assigned Epic application(s).
  • Develop a detailed understanding of organizational workflows and system configuration.
  • Partner with Epic analysts and application teams to understand build decisions and downstream impacts.
  • Translate complex technical functionality into clear, learnercentered training content.
  • Participate in Epic upgrade planning, golives, optimizations, and stabilization efforts

Training Environment & Content Development

  • Build, test, and maintain Epic training environments.
  • Create and manage all training materials, including job aids, manuals, quick references, simulations, and videos.
  • Develop interactive elearning modules using approved authoring tools (e.g., Articulate, Captivate, Camtasia).
  • Apply accessibility, usability, and visual design best practices.
  • Leverage emerging technologies, rapid development tools, and AIenabled solutions to improve efficiency and learner engagement.

Training Delivery & GoLive Support

  • Deliver instructorled and virtual Epic training as required.
  • Train, coach, and credential additional classroom or peer trainers as needed.
  • Provide golive remote and attheelbow support (when needed) during implementations and upgrades.
  • Deliver ongoing postlive and optimization training to support sustained proficiency. 

Stakeholder Collaboration & Change Support

  • Serve as a training liaison between Epic teams and operational, clinical, and administrative stakeholders.
  • Facilitate curriculum reviews and incorporate feedback from SMEs and leaders.
  • Align training strategies with change management and adoption goals.
  • Provide outstanding internal client service while supporting the organization’s mission to improve patient care through technology.
  • Manage and resolve service tickets related to training content, and system updates.

Program Evaluation & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and implement training evaluation tools to assess effectiveness and learner readiness.
  • Analyze learner feedback, performance metrics, and system usage data.
  • Continuously refine curricula and delivery strategies to improve outcomes and efficiency. 

Project & Resource Management

  • Manage multiple training initiatives simultaneously.
  • Track deliverables, timelines, dependencies, and risks.
  • Provide regular status updates to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Perform additional related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Experience designing and delivering training in a healthcare and/or Epic environment.
  • Strong knowledge of adult learning theory and instructional design best practices.
  • Experience communicating technical and clinical information to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, and presentation skills. 
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Epic certification or demonstrated proficiency in assigned application(s).
  • Experience supporting Epic golives or largescale implementations.
  • Clinical or healthcare operational experience (recommended, not required).
  • Experience with Agile or projectbased work environments.
  • Familiarity with AI tools, rapid authoring platforms, or advanced elearning technologies.
