The Associated Press seeks a talented and ambitious student or recent graduate to serve as its 2026 Race and Ethnicity news intern. This internship lasts 24 weeks, beginning August 3, 2026.ย 

As an intern on the Raceย andย Ethnicity team,ย you'llย join a diverse group of journalists based in locations across the country to tell storiesย in various formatsย about culture, complexย historiesย and ongoing struggles with issues of race and ethnicity in the U.S.ย You'llย be expected to help with breaking news coverage,ย pitchย coverageย andย come ahead withย ideasย toย amplifyย the team's workย forย digital audiences.ย The Raceย andย Ethnicity internย willย be based inย New Yorkย Cityย and theย staff positionย isย covered by AP's agreement with the News Media Guild.ย 

Theย internshipย is a full-time, paid working experienceย in which the participantย joinsย newsgathering and production colleagues in conceiving and executing our daily all-formats news report.ย We are seekingย aย strong storyteller whoย demonstratesย solid news judgment andย isย eager to put what they have learned in an academic environment into professional practice.ย Individuals withย diverse experiences and perspectives are encouraged to apply.ย 

Qualifications:ย Strong interpersonal,ย organizationalย and planning skills areย a must, as is a deep interest in the news and current affairs.ย You should be creative, innovative,ย collaborativeย and agile. Skills in more than one format (text, photo, video,ย audio, socialย mediaย and data) are a plus.ย 

We are seekingย anย intern candidate who hasย demonstratedย the potential to work effectively in a deadline-driven,ย dynamicย and competitive newsroom and field environment.ย Anย AP intern should have experience working in college media, as aย freelancerย or as an intern for another news organization. You must be a self-starter with the ability to collaborate effectively and inclusively on teams.ย 

We will considerย a strong candidate who doesย not meet every listed qualification. You may use your essay to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.ย 

Eligibility:ย 

  • Applicants must be current full-time students within two years of earning an undergraduate degree (i.e.ย juniors and seniors),ย current full-time graduate studentsย or recent graduates (fall semester 2025ย and thereafter).ย 

  • Youย mustย have authorization to work in the countryย where the position isย locatedย for six months in 2026.ย 

  • You should have advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency inย additionalย languagesย is a plus.ย

  • A resume, which includes details on projected graduation date and/or education status.ย ย 

  • In lieu of a cover letter, pleaseย attachย the following materialsย inย a single document:ย 

    • A 300-word personal essay discussing the qualities and accomplishments you would bring to the AP as an intern: Why do you want to work for the AP, and how would thisย specificย internshipย positionย align with your career goals?ย 

    • Four to five examples of your best work. Links to an online siteย ofย your work are preferred.ย ย 

    • A reference letter from a prior internship supervisor, media-relatedย employerย or faculty adviser on college/university letterhead.ย 

  • In addition to the above packet, photo and video journalists shouldย submitย a link toย anย online portfolio.ย
