To thrive as an Interim Dean, you need proven leadership experience in academia, advanced degrees (often a doctorate), and a solid record of teaching, research, and service. Familiarity with academic governance systems, budgeting software, and accreditation processes is typically required. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and strategic decision-making abilities are vital soft skills for this transitional leadership role. These skills and qualities are important to ensure continuity, maintain institutional stability, and effectively guide faculty, staff, and students during organizational change.

How does an Interim Dean balance immediate operational needs with long-term strategic planning during their temporary tenure?

An Interim Dean often faces the challenge of managing day-to-day operations—such as faculty concerns, student issues, and budget oversight—while also ensuring that ongoing strategic initiatives remain on track. Since their role is transitional, they must quickly build trust with existing teams, maintain stability, and facilitate continuity in leadership. Collaboration with department chairs, senior staff, and campus administration is critical to address urgent matters without losing sight of the institution’s broader goals. This balance requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and a proactive leadership approach.

What does an Interim Dean do?

An Interim Dean temporarily leads a college or academic division while a permanent dean is being selected. Their responsibilities typically include overseeing academic programs, managing faculty and staff, maintaining budgets, and ensuring the continuation of key initiatives. Interim Deans are often tasked with maintaining stability, addressing immediate challenges, and supporting the transition to new leadership. They may also participate in strategic planning and represent the college within the broader university community.
