The Dean of Online Learning and Innovation provides strategic leadership for the college's online learning ecosystem, digital education initiatives, instructional technologies, and academic innovation efforts. The Dean is responsible for advancing high-quality, student-centered online and hybrid learning experiences that improve access, engagement, retention, completion, and workforce responsiveness.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Instruction, the Dean leads the Center for Interactive Teaching and Learning (CiTL) and serves as the college's primary academic leader for online education, instructional design, faculty development in digital pedagogy, learning technologies, and emerging educational innovations. The Dean collaborates with various college divisions and units to advance the institution's strategic priorities and ensure excellence in online teaching and learning.
Essential Duties include:
Strategic Leadership and Online Learning
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive vision and strategy for online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced learning aligned with institutional strategic priorities.
  • Lead the growth, expansion, and continuous improvement of high-quality online programs, credentials, pathways, and learning experiences.
  • Analyze enrollment, retention, completion, labor market, and student success data to inform online learning strategies and program development.
  • Identify and implement innovative approaches that increase student access, equity, engagement, persistence, and completion in online environments.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators related to online learning quality, student success, faculty engagement, and operational effectiveness.
  • Represent the college in regional, state, and national online learning initiatives, partnerships, and professional organizations.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and standards that support excellence in online education and instructional innovation.

Center for Interactive Teaching and Learning Leadership
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the Center for Interactive Teaching and Learning.
  • Supervise instructional designers, instructional technologists, multimedia specialists, and other personnel supporting online learning and instructional innovation.
  • Develop sustainable workflows and operational processes supporting course design, development, review, and continuous improvement.
  • Direct the design, development, and implementation of high-quality online and hybrid courses utilizing evidence-based instructional design principles.
  • Ensure alignment of instructional design practices with recognized quality standards, including accessibility, universal design for learning, and online course quality frameworks.
  • Manage budgets, contracts, vendor relationships, and resource allocation associated with online learning initiatives.

Faculty Development and Teaching Excellence
  • Lead professional development initiatives that enhance faculty effectiveness in online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced instruction.
  • Promote evidence-based teaching practices, student engagement strategies, and innovative pedagogical approaches.
  • Collaborate with academic leaders to support faculty adoption of emerging instructional technologies and digital learning practices.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, experimentation, and innovation in teaching and learning.
  • Provide leadership in faculty training related to accessibility, instructional technology, academic integrity, artificial intelligence, and online student engagement.

Learning Technologies and Innovation
  • Provide strategic oversight for the college's learning management system and instructional technology ecosystem.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement emerging educational technologies that support student success and instructional excellence.
  • Collaborate with Information Technology and other stakeholders to ensure effective integration, support, and utilization of instructional technologies.
  • Monitor trends and advancements in online learning, artificial intelligence, learning analytics, adaptive learning, and digital education.
  • Utilize technology, including AI-enabled tools and software where appropriate, to support the effective performance of assigned duties, enhance productivity, improve communication and information management, support decision-making, and other responsibilities, while ensuring compliance with confidentiality requirements, institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.

Compliance, Quality Assurance, and Accreditation
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, accreditation, accessibility, and regulatory requirements related to online education.
  • Oversee online course quality review processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support accreditation activities, program reviews, and institutional reporting related to online learning.
  • Ensure adherence to standards regarding accessibility, regular and substantive interaction, student authentication, and distance education regulations.
  • Other duties assigned by the Executive Vice President for Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution in curriculum and instruction, instructional design, educational leadership, or other related field required with at least seven years of experience.
  • Eight (8) or more years of college-level administrative and management experience overseeing a team that provides support for instructional design, faculty training, and online learning.
  • At least five years of experience in the use of technology in instruction and research.
  • Experience managing or supervising creative and technical staff.
  • Administrative experience with Learning Management Systems, specifically Canvas.
  • Demonstrated experience working with internal staff and faculty to advance online learning.
  • Successful project management experience.
  • Knowledge of ADA, Section 508, FERPA and copyright standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with faculty, students, staff and community.
  • Ability to use workplace technology relevant to the position, including the capacity to learn and appropriately leverage emerging AI-supported tools.
  • Ability to assess the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content, maintain confidentiality, and apply sound judgment and ethical practices in the use of technology.
