Interim Controller (Private Equity-Backed | Manufacturing/Wholesale Environment)
Cherry Bekaert Recruiting & Staffing is partnered with a private equity-backed organization in the manufacturing/wholesale sector seeking an experienced Interim Controller to provide immediate accounting leadership during a transition period. This organization operates multiple entities and supports major retail customers, creating a dynamic and growth-oriented environment. With the current Controller departing, the company requires a hands-on leader to stabilize operations, ensure continuity, and improve core accounting processes. This is a highly visible role reporting directly to the CFO and leading a small accounting team. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating in a lean environment and driving efficiencies without disrupting ongoing operations.
Location: Danville, VA (On-site initially, then hybrid)
Duration: Interim
Hourly Rate: $70-85/hour

Position Overview
The Interim Controller will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, lead the month-end close process, and provide structure to financial reporting activities. This individual will also identify process improvement opportunities while maintaining operational continuity during the transition to a permanent hire.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the monthly close process, improving timeline and efficiency
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations across multiple entities
  • Supervise and mentor a Junior Accountant and AP Coordinator
  • Review journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP
  • Partner closely with the CFO on accounting and operational priorities
  • Support cash management, AP, AR, and general ledger activities
  • Evaluate and enhance accounting workflows, controls, and processes
  • Provide recommendations for process improvements while maintaining stability
  • Support transition planning and ensure continuity of accounting operations

Qualifications

Required:

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Prior Controller or Assistant Controller experience
  • Strong experience leading month-end close in a multi-entity environment
  • Proven ability to manage and develop accounting staff
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
  • Ability to operate independently in a lean, fast-paced environment

Preferred:

  • Experience with Ramp or similar expense management platforms
  • Background in manufacturing, wholesale distribution, or inventory-based businesses
  • Experience in private equity-backed organizations
  • Demonstrated process improvement or accounting transformation experience
  • CPA preferred but not required

Engagement Details

  • On-site for the first two weeks, transitioning to a hybrid schedule (2–3 days onsite)
  • Immediate start required; client is actively interviewing
