What is an independent contractor magazine advertising sales professional?

Independent Contractor Magazine Advertising Sales professionals are self-employed individuals who sell advertising space in magazines on a contract basis rather than as direct employees. They are responsible for finding clients, negotiating ad rates, and managing client relationships. These contractors typically earn commissions based on the advertisements they sell and have the flexibility to work with multiple publishers or magazines. Their success relies on strong sales skills, networking, and a good understanding of the target audience for the magazines they represent.

How do independent contractor magazine advertising sales professionals typically build and maintain a client base?

Independent Contractors in magazine advertising sales often start by leveraging their personal and professional networks, attending industry events, and conducting targeted outreach to potential advertisers. Maintaining strong relationships with clients is crucial, which involves regular communication, understanding their marketing goals, and providing tailored advertising solutions. Many professionals also track industry trends and proactively suggest new opportunities to existing clients, helping to retain business and encourage repeat sales. Over time, a successful contractor develops a reputation for reliability and results, making referrals and word-of-mouth key drivers for expanding their client base.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor magazine advertising sales professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Magazine Advertising Sales professional, you need a strong background in sales, negotiation, and client relationship management, often supported by experience in media or advertising. Familiarity with CRM software, digital advertising platforms, and analytics tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, self-motivation, and resilience help you excel in this highly competitive and commission-driven environment. These skills ensure you can effectively generate leads, close deals, and maintain lasting client partnerships, which are critical for sustained success in advertising sales.

Job description

Turn your love of community into a career.

Best Version Media is looking for a driven, community-minded sales professional to join us as an Advertising Sales Representative.

About Best Version Media

Founded in 2007, Best Version Media (BVM) has spent nearly two decades bringing North American communities together one person, one home, one business at a time. Today, BVM publishes over 1,300 local magazines and reaches billions of digital impressions across North America, helping thousands of local business owners grow.

What You'll Do

This is a field-based, in-person sales role. You'll build your own book of business in your local territory, on a schedule you control, selling advertising placements across BVM's local print magazine and companion digital, social, and website products.

  • Consult: Meet face-to-face with standout local business owners to showcase what makes their community great.
  • Strategize: Build powerful, multi-channel branding programs using our media suite, print, digital, social, websites, and reputation management.
  • Scale: Leverage our proven training and time-tested sales system to grow your own book of business, building community engagement that pays you and your community for years to come.

What You'll Earn

This is a 1099 independent contractor role with no base salary or draw (full commission). Representatives earn a recurring commission on sales, with commission rates generally ranging from 70-80% based on monthly sales volume and performance relative to the baseline* cost structure. Bonuses are available during start-up and on an ongoing basis.

*Baseline is the back-end cost associated with the magazine & digital product's cost to produce, distribute, bill clients, etc, and does not come out of the representative's pocket.

What You Bring

  • Sales Acumen: A drive to help local businesses grow through the art of advertising sales, strong communication, negotiation, and closing skills. Experience with digital or print advertising is a plus, but the right attitude matters most; we provide the training.
  • Growth Mindset: A resilient, never-give-up attitude paired with a proactive approach to learning and continuous self-improvement.
  • Community Focus: A genuine interest in building and nurturing relationships with local business owners, putting their success first.

Why Best Version Media?

  • Support: Comprehensive training and ongoing professional support, we're a community in ourselves.
  • Proven Success: Nearly 20 years serving local communities, with over 1,300 publications and a reach of billions of digital impressions across North America.
  • Culture & Rewards: Our why is simple: bring communities closer, one relationship at a time, and we celebrate the people who make that happen.
    • Earn incentive trips, awards, and friendly contests along the way, all within a flexible schedule built to keep you present for what matters most: friends and family.
