What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HRIS developer, and why are they important?

To excel as an HRIS Developer, you need strong skills in software development, database management, and a solid understanding of human resources processes, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency in HRIS platforms like Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, or Oracle HCM, as well as experience with programming languages (e.g., SQL, Java, Python) and relevant certifications, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively with HR teams and stakeholders. These abilities are critical for implementing and maintaining efficient HR systems that meet organizational goals and ensure accurate data management.

How does an HRIS developer typically collaborate with HR and IT teams to implement new system features?

As an HRIS Developer, you’ll frequently work alongside both HR professionals and IT specialists to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions. Collaboration often involves gathering feedback from HR users, designing or customizing modules, testing new functionalities, and troubleshooting issues. Effective communication is key, as you’ll need to bridge the gap between end-user needs and system capabilities. This cross-team collaboration not only ensures successful feature rollouts but also offers valuable exposure to both HR processes and technical project management.

Full-time

Job description

Company Overview
Allen Control Systems (ACS) is a cutting-edge defense startup founded by two former Navy electrical engineers with a proven track record in robotics and software. We are developing an autonomous gun turret using advanced computer vision and control systems to precisely detect, track, and neutralize enemy drones.
With an engineering-first culture, ACS values technical excellence and innovation. Backed by our founders' successful exits from two previous ventures acquired for a combined $180M in 2022, we are committed to ensuring that the groundbreaking technologies we develop will have a real-world impact.
About The Role
We are looking for a Senior HRIS Specialist to own ACS's Rippling HRIS platform during a critical growth phase. You will be the Rippling expert for the organization, advising HR, Finance, and leadership on platform configuration, optimization, reporting, and data-driven HR insights. This is a technical, systems-focused role that bridges HR business needs with Rippling platform capabilities, ensuring accurate employee data, seamless integrations, and actionable analytics across payroll, benefits, recruiting, and IT as we scale rapidly.
What You'll Do
  • Own Rippling platform administration: configure and optimize for ACS's needs, manage user access and permissions, maintain workflows and automations across payroll, benefits, onboarding, and offboarding, and stay current on feature updates.
  • Own employee data accuracy and integrity; manage master data including demographics, org structure, compensation, and employment status; conduct regular audits and maintain data governance standards and validation rules.
  • Manage Rippling integrations with Ashby, time tracking, expense management, benefits vendors, and other external systems; develop automated data workflows to reduce manual entry; monitor integration health and troubleshoot sync issues.
  • Design and build Rippling reports and dashboards for leadership and managers covering headcount, turnover, hiring pipeline, compensation, and org structure; support strategic HR planning with data analysis and present insights and recommendations to leadership.
  • Ensure Rippling configurations meet compliance requirements (HIPAA, ADA, I-9, data privacy); maintain data security and access controls; support audit documentation; respond to employee and manager Rippling questions and provide ongoing training and support to all users.

What You'll Need
  • 5+ years of HRIS administration experience, including at least 2 years at a senior or specialist level managing an HRIS platform.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise with Rippling HRIS, with experience serving as the primary administrator and internal subject matter expert responsible for system configuration, workflows, automations, reporting, and employee lifecycle management.
  • Strong understanding of HRIS workflows, automations, integrations, and reporting; experience managing data integrity, org charts, employee records, and master data.
  • Proficiency with reporting and dashboard creation; experience configuring HRIS integrations with external systems including recruiting, time tracking, and benefits providers.
  • Understanding of HR processes and compliance requirements (ADA, HIPAA, I-9, wage/hour, data privacy); ability to work with both HR business users and technical IT or vendor partners.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills; ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee data with professionalism.

You'll Stand Out
  • Direct Rippling experience; Rippling certification or Rippling expert badge holder strongly preferred.
  • Experience implementing HRIS at a startup or high-growth company scaling from 50 to 500+ employees.
  • SQL or API knowledge for working with Rippling data feeds and integrations.
  • Knowledge of ACA, FMLA, WARN Act, and EEO-1 reporting requirements.

What We Offer
  • Competitive salary
  • ACS Equity Package
  • Health, Dental, Vision Insurance
  • Paid Time Off
