What is the difference between Group Sales vs Event Sales?

AspectGroup SalesEvent Sales

Work EnvironmentHotels, resorts, cruise lines, entertainment venuesEvent venues, conference centers, hotels, catering companies
Required SkillsCustomer service, negotiation, industry knowledgeEvent planning, sales, client management
Common CertificationsSales certifications, hospitality industry credentialsEvent planning certifications, sales training

Understanding these differences helps job seekers target the right opportunities based on their skills and interests.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Group Sales professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Group Sales professional, you need strong sales acumen, negotiation skills, and experience in account management, usually supported by a background in business, marketing, or hospitality. Familiarity with CRM software, event management platforms, and sales analytics tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, relationship-building abilities, and a customer-focused mindset set top performers apart in this role. These skills are vital for securing group bookings, maintaining client satisfaction, and achieving revenue targets in a competitive sales environment.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

In group sales or similar roles, earning $10,000 a month typically requires extensive experience, strong sales skills, and a proven track record of high-value deals. Many such positions are commission-based and may involve working in industries like real estate, luxury goods, or corporate events, often without requiring a formal degree but emphasizing networking, negotiation, and industry knowledge.

What are group sales?

Group sales refer to the process of selling products or services to large groups, organizations, or businesses rather than individual customers. This approach is commonly used in industries like hospitality, entertainment, and travel, where discounts or special packages are offered to groups as an incentive. Group sales professionals are responsible for identifying potential group clients, negotiating contracts, and ensuring a positive experience for clients throughout the sales process.

How does a Group Sales professional typically collaborate with other departments to secure and execute large bookings?

Group Sales professionals often work closely with marketing, event planning, and operations teams to ensure a seamless experience for clients. They coordinate with marketing to develop targeted outreach and promotional materials, and with event planners to customize offerings based on group needs. Additionally, they liaise with operations to confirm availability, special requirements, and logistics. This cross-departmental collaboration is essential to deliver tailored solutions that meet client expectations and drive repeat business.

Job description

Overview
Group Sales Manager
Galleria Park Hotel | San Francisco, California
Galleria Park Hotel is seeking an experienced, motivated, and highly proactive Group Sales Manager to join our commercial team and help build on our continued success. Recently recognized as Property of the Year within the CoralTree Hospitality portfolio, Galleria Park Hotel earned this distinction through exceptional performance in financial results, market positioning, and guest satisfaction. This recognition speaks to the strength of our team, the distinctiveness of our hotel, and the exciting opportunity for the right sales professional to contribute to that momentum.
This is not an entry-level role or a first-time seller opportunity. We are looking for a seasoned hotel sales professional with at least three years of hotel sales experience who understands how to strategically prospect, uncover opportunities, build lasting relationships, and close business with confidence. The ideal candidate is agile, resourceful, and energized by the opportunity to pursue new business while representing a boutique urban hotel with pride, creativity, and a strong sense of purpose. This position requires a full-time on-site presence and is not available as a remote opportunity. Because hospitality is rooted in service, teamwork, and real-time support, we consider in-person engagement an essential part of the role.
Position Overview
The Group Sales Manager will be responsible for soliciting, developing, and securing corporate group business for Galleria Park Hotel, with a strong emphasis on proactive outbound sales activity. This individual will manage the full sales cycle, from prospecting and lead generation through contract negotiation, turnover, and ongoing account development. Success in this role requires strong business acumen, market awareness, sales discipline, and the ability to build trust with clients while consistently driving revenue.
The ideal candidate understands the demands of hotel group sales and knows how to balance prospecting, client relationship management, and internal collaboration to produce strong results. This role requires someone who can think strategically, move quickly, and remain focused on both short-term wins and long-term account growth.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Proactively solicit and secure corporate group business through outside sales efforts, prospecting, networking, lead follow-up, and account development
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities through direct outreach, inbound lead conversion, third-party lead sources, and local market intelligence
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with corporate clients, meeting planners, intermediaries, and key decision-makers
  • Manage sales inquiries and RFPs with urgency, professionalism, and a strong focus on conversion
  • Prepare and present customized proposals, pricing strategies, and contracts aligned with hotel revenue goals and market strategy
  • Conduct site tours, client visits, sales calls, and presentations that effectively communicate the hotel's value proposition and competitive advantages
  • Negotiate group contracts and commitments with a strong understanding of need dates, displacement, pattern management, and total account value
  • Collaborate closely with revenue management, operations, and hotel leadership to ensure smart business decisions and a seamless transition from signed contract to execution
  • Maintain strong knowledge of market trends, competitor activity, pace, and demand generators in the San Francisco market
  • Participate in sales action planning, forecasting, pipeline management, and account strategy discussions
  • Represent Galleria Park Hotel and CoralTree Hospitality with professionalism, energy, credibility, and a genuine passion for hospitality

Qualifications
What We Are Looking For
The successful candidate will bring:
  • A minimum of three years with proven experience in hotel sales, with a strong preference for candidates who have directly sold group and corporate group business
  • A track record of prospecting, developing, and closing business rather than relying solely on inbound leads
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and presentation skills
  • The ability to work independently, manage priorities effectively, and stay focused on revenue generation
  • A nimble, agile mindset and the confidence to pivot strategies as market conditions evolve
  • A polished and professional presence with strong relationship-building instincts
  • Understanding of hotel operations and the importance of partnering across departments to deliver an exceptional client and guest experience
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, urban, boutique, or lifestyle hotel environment is strongly preferred

Why This Role Is Special
This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-performing hotel with a compelling story, a strong culture, and real market momentum. Galleria Park Hotel is not only a distinctive San Francisco property, but also a proven top performer within CoralTree Hospitality. The person in this role will have the opportunity to sell an award-winning hotel, work alongside a strong leadership team, and make a meaningful impact on the property's continued success.
We are looking for a seller who is strategic, hungry, and confident, someone who understands the art and discipline of hotel sales and is excited to go after business, win new accounts, and contribute to a winning team.
If you are an experienced hotel sales professional who thrives on relationship-building, prospecting, and driving results, we would love to hear from you.
As a valued member of the Galleria Park Hotel team, you'll receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes:
  • Participation in a lucrative and uncapped company incentive plan
  • Group medical, dental, vision, life, and disability benefits.
  • Participation in a pre-tax flexible benefit plan for healthcare and dependent care reimbursement
  • An employee assistance program.
  • Paid time off, holiday pay and wellness
  • Participation in a 401(k) plan with a company match.
  • Team member free room night program.
  • Other property benefits

Join us in creating unforgettable experiences for our guests, building vibrant communities, and shaping the future of travel and hospitality.
