Reports To: ย  ย  ย  ย  ย Director of Maintenance and Grounds and Executive Director of Operations
Site: ย ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  Shawnee Public Schools (all locations)
Qualifications: ย  ย ย 



  • Active Shawnee High School Student.
  • Experience in lawn and grounds maintenance. (Preferred)
  • Reliable transportation to and from the Maintenance Shop for Scheduled work.


Credentials: ย  ย  ย None required. Must have driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Education: ย  ย  ย  ย Active Shawnee High School Student, High School diploma or equivalent.


Training or Experience Required: ย  ย ย None required.ย  Prior experience with mowing, weed eating, edging, general law maintenance a plus.
Job Summary (Position Purpose): ย  ย  Perform basic lawn maintenance at district sites.ย  Responsible for mowing, weed eating, edging, trash pickup, hedge and shrubbery grooming. Under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance and Grounds, the Intern would assist in maintaining school buildings and grounds in orderly, neat, safe, and operable conditions.ย 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of lawn maintenance operations and fundamentals.
  • Ability to follow written and oral tasks from supervisor, and ability to coordinate work with others.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished both in writing and diagrammatic.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide units of measurement.
  • Ability to communicate maintenance or repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to report work both orally and in writing to the supervisor as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.ย 


Essential Job Functions (PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES):

  • Perform tasks such as mowing, weed-eating, edging, brush removal, and picking up trash across Shawnee Public School sites.
  • Performs tasks that maintain safe and operable condition across Shawnee Public School sites.
  • Inspects equipment and facilities, and recommends repair/replacement actions to the supervisor.
  • Obtains equipment, tools, and materials required for completion of assigned work/ work orders.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, materials, equipment, and fuel. Notify supervisor of deficiencies.
  • Prepares and maintains records to document work and repairs as requested.


ย Supervision Exercised: ย  ย  Employee does not supervise other employees.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions:

  1. Must be able to stand/walk 6-8 hours.
  2. Requires occasional to frequent bending/stooping, squatting/crouching, pushing/pulling, climbingย  and reaching above the shoulders.
  3. Occasional crawling/kneeling is required.
  4. Requires frequent carrying/lifting up to 35 pounds and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  5. Must possess manual dexterity/visual ability to operate hand and power tools, and ladders safely. Must be able to read instructions.
  6. Employee must possess hearing to distinguish normal/abnormal sounds.
  7. Must be able to communicate with fellow workers and the public.
  8. Must be able to climb ladders and work within confined spaces.
  9. Must be able to see problems and dangers in low visibility situations.
  10. Working in the outdoors with temperature changes; driving motorized equipment (tractors, trucks); exposure to gas and oil.ย

  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment when required.
  • Safety glasses, hearing protection and gloves will be provided.ย 

Terms of Employment:ย  Temporary position beginning to be determined with Director (late May or early June) and ending (late July or early August).ย  Works 7 hours per day, 4 days a week for 8.5 weeks (35 Days). Pay is $12 per hour.ย ย 

Evaluation:ย  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Shawnee Board Policy on evaluation of personnel.
