Job description

COVINGTON INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT 

THIS POSITION IS FOR THE 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR

SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

POSTING DATE:  06/09/2026

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hold or be eligible for a valid Kentucky guidance certificate.
  • Have advanced graduate course work in guidance/counseling or curriculum (preferred).
  • Have proven ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.
  • Have experience working in collaboration with other professionals in the classroom and on committees.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Building Principal

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide individual and group guidance services to assigned students.  Facilitate referrals to the Youth Service Center, school psychologists, and community agencies.
  • Assist in enrolling students, building schedules, assigning appropriate grade level/retentions as well as assist students in developing graduation plans.
  • Participate in Secondary Support Services meetings as requested by principal.
  • Assist students and parents with enrollment in related programs such as Summer School, the Covington Adult High School, alternative programs, and tutoring as needed.
  • Assist students and parents in developing and implementing post-secondary and transition plans.  Fill out transition surveys with seniors during exit interviews. Provide help to assistant principal in the follow up report for transition surveys as requested.
  • Assist in coordination and implementation of all required testing, surveys, research and the interpretation of test results to teachers, students, and parents as requested.
  • Assist in the interpretation of test results in the evaluation of the Annual School-Based Improvement Plan as requested.
  • Serve on or chair Admission and Release Committee and work with managing teachers as requested.
  • Participate in Parent/Teacher Conferences and serve on committees for school improvement as assigned by principal or Site Based Council.
  • Assist students and parents in developing course requests, schedules, appropriate credits for graduation and the career clusters/majors selected by the student.
  • Maintain effective communications and related work functions with district offices and community agencies.
  • Maintain effective communications with secondary department chairpersons, secondary staff and psychologists.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of school and/or districtwide guidance programs.  (e.g., Honor Night, Career Night, graduation practice, graduation).
  • Assist the principal and guidance chairperson in the implementation of the computerized student scheduling system (e.g., course requests, course conflicts.)
  • Assist the principal and records office in implementation of the computerized grade reporting system where needed.
  • Assist the principal and assistant principal in the identification for honors status, KHEES scholarship, assignment of grade level, and diploma programs for graduation.
  • Assist the principal and guidance chairperson in the development and implementation of student and faculty evaluation of the guidance program as requested.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by administrator or Superintendent.

JOB GOAL:

  • To provide personal, social and educational services to students in order to enhance the student's educational and personal growth and development.  This includes counseling, guidance information, referrals, career planning and assessment.  To also assist administrative supervisors in maintaining effective communication with students, parents, teachers, and administrators. 

CONTRACT:                                          210 Days 

SALARY:  Based on rank and experience plus 1.24 index
