Job description

Utilizes plan of care to monitor patient progress and assure patient requirements match with appropriate resources. This role will require additional responsibilities related to promotion of trauma standards of care according to nationally accepted American College of Surgeonโ€™s (ACS) guidelines.

The Trauma PI and Education Coordinator must be able to demonstrate knowledge of growth and development to identify best practice for the care of the trauma patient. The Trauma PI and Education Coordinator will also be responsible for development and implementation of programs to reduce injuries and standardize trauma care in the adolescent, adult and senior population. Doing this by providing education to the general public and healthcare professionals. Responsible for identifying, establishing and maintaining relationships with local and referring hospital physicians and staff, Emergency Medical Services, Public Safety and Fire Department personnel, and communities throughout Middle Tennessee. Develops and implements trauma related education and prevention programs locally and regionally. This role will require additional responsibilities related to promotion of trauma and burn standards of care according to ACS guidelines.

The Trauma PI and Education Coordinator also works under the general supervision of the ED Nurse Manager will serve as a resource to frontline staff to ensure ED patients are receiving current evidence-based quality care. They are responsible for staff education, training, and competencies. With a daily focus on clinical care, outcomes performance, patient advocacy, staff development, team building, and quality outcomes to help the Emergency Department reach departmental and NGH goals.

Additional experience requirements

Minimum 2-3 years clinical nursing experience preferred. Computer and keyboarding skills are needed.

Ability to execute independent judgments, work independently and display excellent verbal and written communications skills required. Knowledge of and experience in project development and team building. Ability to multi-task and work in stressful situations while achieving outcomes.

Job Duties

Management of Patient Care

1. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following and 0ther duties as assigned:

ยท Facilitates identification and documentation of hospital-based and ACS performance improvement variances and complications.

ยท Identifies patient for the Trauma Registry.

ยท Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director, Trauma Program Manager and other hospital personnel to evaluate and problem solve variations in care and recommend alterations in plan of care.

ยท Actively participates in Trauma Activations while in-house.

ยท Assists in the preparation for the ACS verification site visits.

2. Trauma Program Management:

ยท Concurrently reviews cases to identify quality, timeliness, and systems issues in the care of trauma patients, to meet ACS standards, departmental need, and administrative agendas.

ยท Assesses and prioritizes needs for protocols, guidelines, pathways, and standard order sets relating to the care of the trauma patient in consultation with the Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Medical Director.

ยท Assist with and prioritizes gap analysis for Level III, Level II, and Level I trauma.

ยท Coordinates the communication and implementation of standards to the hospital nursing staff through both formal and informal settings.

ยท Maintains and monitors documented standards through direct observation, medical record review, staff feedback and other appropriate sources.

ยท Performs and assists with the Trauma Program Managerโ€™s duties in absence or during scheduled time off.

ยท Collaborates with case managers and other members of the Multidisciplinary Team to facilitate discharge planning needs, including anticipated length of stay and resource utilization.

3. Quality Improvement:

ยท Assists the Trauma Program Manager in the development, implementation and evaluation of a quality plan which is multidisciplinary and patient outcome focused.

ยท Reports to the Trauma Program Manager any identified quality issues throughout the trauma program.

ยท Monitors sentinel events, deaths, transfers, complications, hospital length of stay, adherence to protocols, and variances.

ยท Maintains current knowledge of external and internal quality indicators and standards.

ยท Participates in Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Committee (TPIPS), Trauma Peer Review Committee (TPRC), weekly TMD and ED medical Director Meeting, and other meetings as needed.

ยท Assists Trauma Registrars with medical record data extrapolation for the Trauma Registry.

ยท Participates in and promotes trauma research activities.

ยท Ensures that PI plan is updated on an annual basis in compliance with state requirements and hospital policy

4. Facilitates TPIPS/TPRC Committee:

ยท Identifies cases that require performance improvement review

ยท Tracks issues through the PI process in collaboration with the trauma team

ยท Assists the TPM and TMD by reviewing selected deaths, complications, and sentinel events with objective identification of issues and appropriate responses.

ยท Ensures loop closures are documented and are monitored

5. Trauma Education:

ยท Assess, plan, implement and evaluate educational activities planning for the trauma service.

ยท Collaborate with nurse managers and staff to assess learning needs and competencies.

ยท Develop, implement, and evaluate educational plans/programs and utilize methods, measurements, and tools to evaluate achievement of learning goals.

ยท Identify and/or develop teaching tools and instructional materials.

ยท Keep records of educational activities.

ยท Clinical expertise to be the leader in coordination of specialty education to include, but not limited to TNCC, ENPC and ATLS.

ยท This educator will create and effectively initiate internal and external educational opportunities based upon for trauma education.

ยท In addition, this individual will participate in performance improvement activities related to trauma care.

ยท Serves as an internal resource for staff in all departments through trauma education. The employee should serve as a trauma care resource person to individuals to include the pediatric through the geriatric population within the institution and the community.
