What is programmatic advertising?

Programmatic advertising is the automated buying and selling of online ad space using software, algorithms, and real-time bidding. It allows advertisers to efficiently target specific audiences across websites, apps, and digital platforms by using data and machine learning. This approach streamlines the ad placement process, maximizes reach, and optimizes budgets by delivering ads to the right users at the right time. Full-time programmatic advertising roles focus on managing these campaigns, analyzing performance data, and continually optimizing for better results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time programmatic advertising specialist?

To thrive as a Programmatic Advertising Specialist, you need a solid understanding of digital marketing principles, data analysis, and campaign management, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in marketing or a related field. Familiarity with demand-side platforms (DSPs) like The Trade Desk, Google DV360, and analytics tools, as well as relevant certifications such as Google Ads or IAB Digital Media Buying and Planning, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals optimize campaigns and collaborate with clients or team members. These skills are essential for maximizing advertising ROI, targeting audiences accurately, and delivering measurable business results in a fast-evolving digital landscape.

What are some common challenges faced in a full time programmatic advertising role, and how can they be addressed?

A common challenge in a full-time programmatic advertising role is keeping up with the rapidly evolving technology and platforms. Professionals must continuously learn about new tools, privacy regulations, and optimization strategies to ensure campaigns remain effective. Additionally, managing large volumes of data and balancing client expectations with performance metrics can be demanding. Collaborating closely with data analysts, creative teams, and account managers can help address these issues and ensure campaigns are both innovative and compliant.

Annual Salary Range: $130k - $150k
Key responsibilities
  • Serve as the programmatic lead within the Revenue Organization, maintaining strong visibility in the marketplace and actively developing new revenue opportunities.
  • Build, manage, and grow a robust pipeline of programmatic partnerships through 1:1 deals, preferred deals, and private marketplaces (PMPs).
  • Establish and deepen relationships with trading desks, DSPs, agencies, and client teams to ensure The Guardian is top-of-mind in programmatic planning.

  • Act as an internal advocate and thought leader on all things programmatic - including first-party data strategies, SSP partnerships, and evolving privacy regulations.
  • Provide accurate forecasting, reporting, and tracking for all programmatic revenue lines and consistently maintain a clear path to quarterly goals.

Key skills & qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in digital advertising with a focus on programmatic sales, account management, or platform-side business development.
  • Demonstrated success in building and closing programmatic revenue partnerships with agency and brand partners.
  • Deep understanding of the AdTech ecosystem including DSPs, SSPs, DMPs, ad servers, and data targeting strategies.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to derive actionable insights from campaign performance data.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills - adept at both internal cross-functional collaboration and external client-facing engagements.
  • Strategic and consultative approach to sales, focused on long-term value creation and client satisfaction.
  • Passion for mission-driven media and an understanding of how premium content plays a role in the programmatic marketplace.
  • Experience in a news publishing or international media environment (preferred).

About you
  • Self-starter with a relentless drive to meet and exceed goals.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and developing new solutions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to lead client conversations with both technical knowledge and business acumen.
