What is freelance medical coding?

Freelance medical coding involves working independently to translate healthcare diagnoses, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. Freelancers work remotely for multiple clients, such as hospitals, clinics, or private practices, to ensure accurate coding for billing and insurance purposes. This job requires thorough knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and attention to detail. Freelance medical coders enjoy flexibility in their schedules and the ability to choose their clients, but they must also manage their own business operations and stay updated on coding standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance medical coder?

To thrive as a Freelance Medical Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding systems, often demonstrated by a certification such as CPC or CCS. Familiarity with coding software, electronic health records (EHR), and billing platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and effective communication with clients and healthcare providers are crucial soft skills. These competencies are vital for ensuring accurate coding, timely reimbursement, and successful collaboration in a remote, self-managed work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance medical coders, and how can they be managed?

Freelance medical coders often face challenges such as staying updated with changing coding guidelines, managing multiple clients' expectations, and ensuring consistent workflow. To address these, coders should invest in ongoing education, maintain strong organizational skills, and build a reliable professional network. Regularly reviewing updates from coding authorities and using secure, HIPAA-compliant tools for communication and record-keeping can also help maintain accuracy and client trust.

Are freelance medical coders still in demand?

Freelance medical coders are still in demand due to ongoing healthcare industry needs for accurate coding for billing and compliance. The role requires knowledge of coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and many employers seek experienced coders with certification. Remote work opportunities and flexible schedules make this a viable option for qualified professionals.

Can I do freelance medical coding as a side hustle?

Freelance medical coding is a viable side hustle for professionals with coding certifications and knowledge of medical billing and coding systems. It typically involves working remotely on flexible schedules, often requiring familiarity with coding software and adherence to industry standards. Many coders take on part-time projects to supplement their income while maintaining their primary employment.

Is remote medical coding worth it?

Remote medical coding offers flexibility and the ability to work from home, which can improve work-life balance. It requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and often a certification such as CPC. Many find it a worthwhile career option due to its demand and convenience.

Job description

We're looking for an Editorial Content Manager who wants to join one of the most ambitious, hard-working brand teams out there. We're truly obsessed with amplifying the stories of Healthcare Professionals (aka Awesome Humans), and the right candidate will be, too.

If you've been at this for a minute, maybe job descriptions with the words "rockstar" and "ninja" make you want to gouge your eyes out. We think that's a great place to start this conversation.

Instead: You're a writer, editor, strategist, and content aficionado who has deep opinions about omni-channel digital media (but you also love print, because it's tactile, beautiful, immersive, and it'll never, ever die). You're culture-obsessed, wildly self-motivated, a brilliant collaborator, and super detail-oriented. You understand the need to constantly adapt to new mediums and technologies while maintaining an unshakable conviction that the fundamentals of good storytelling never change.

Day to day, you'll be working hand-in-hand with our Impact and Marketing team to develop and execute 360-degree content strategies and campaigns around our nonprofit organization, The Awesome Humans Foundation, as well as oversee the development and execution of new digital and print assets (i.e. Substack, podcasts, a quarterly print publication, and beyond) that support our core brand campaigns and initiatives.

This role reports directly to the Narrative Director.

What you'll do:

  • Lead content strategy for our Impact team, working closely with the Director to develop and execute both long-form and short-form storytelling assets that support and amplify the mission and impact of our nonprofit organization.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing team to ensure all Impact content is holistically and seamlessly integrated with overall marketing strategy and calendar.
  • Lead development strategy and execution of an in-house podcast, overseeing content and talent planning, as well as amplification strategy in partnership with our Marketing and Growth teams.
  • Oversee expansion and development of the FIGS catalogs into a more editorial magazine format.
  • Lead editorial production for FIGS coffee table books.
  • Begin to develop long-term strategy for media expansion into a multi-podcast network and unscripted TV in partnership with executive Marketing team.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of editorial experience, preferably in a digital media space encompassing blogs, articles, and other formats of long-form storytelling.
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably with a degree in English, Communications, or Journalism.
  • A master's degree in English, Communications, or Journalism is a strong upside.
  • Experience in audio and visual storytelling, in addition to written content
  • Knowledge of print media production
  • Experience in managing and editing freelance contributors

Other must haves:

  • You've got a sense of humor (or three)
  • You're excellent at problem solving on your own, but not afraid to ask questions when you need to
  • You love a fast-paced environment (like...really fast paced)
  • You're looking for a company you can grow with
  • You love a company with a real purpose that stands by its values
  • You're 100% Awesome. Just like our scrubs.
