What is a freelance learning and development professional?

A Freelance Learning and Development (L&D) professional is an independent contractor who designs, delivers, and evaluates training programs for organizations or individuals. They often create customized learning materials, conduct workshops, and assess training effectiveness to help clients achieve their professional development goals. Unlike in-house L&D specialists, freelancers work with multiple clients and may specialize in areas such as leadership training, e-learning, or instructional design. Their flexible approach allows organizations to access specialized expertise as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance learning and development professional?

To thrive as a Freelance Learning and Development Specialist, you need expertise in instructional design, adult learning principles, and curriculum development, often backed by a degree in education, HR, or a related field. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools (such as Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and relevant certifications like CPLP or ATD are highly valuable. Outstanding communication, project management, and adaptability help you engage clients and learners while managing multiple projects independently. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering impactful learning experiences, meeting diverse client needs, and maintaining a successful freelance business.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance learning and development professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Freelance learning and development professionals often face challenges such as securing consistent projects, adapting to diverse organizational cultures, and staying current with industry trends. Building a strong professional network and maintaining an up-to-date portfolio can help in finding new clients. Additionally, proactively engaging in continuous learning and leveraging feedback from clients can ensure your skills remain relevant and competitive. Communication and adaptability are key to successfully collaborating with different stakeholders and delivering effective learning solutions.

TouchDesigner Developer /Interactive Artist (Freelance/Project Based)

CoCreativ

Manhattan, NY โ€ข On-site

Temporary

Posted 15 days ago

Job description

CoCreativ is a leading creative production company providing end-to-end solutions through Industrial Color, Smashbox Studios, and Globaledit. Together, our companies support brands and creative teams across photography, video, post-production, CGI, e-commerce content, studio services, and creative workflow technology.
About the Project
CoCreativ is exploring a gesture- and voice-interactive LED installation for an on-site activation.
The experience would allow visitors to see themselves composited into AI-generated environments while generative visuals respond to their movements. A conversational AI system would also respond to spoken questions through synchronized visuals and audio.
This is an early-stage Special Project. We are looking for an experienced freelancer who can help assess feasibility, recommend the right technical approach, and potentially lead development and deployment if the project moves forward.
This is a hybrid role based in New York, with in-office work in Tribeca Tuesday through Thursday for the duration of the project.
What You'll Do
  • Lead the technical approach and build in TouchDesigner or similar programming language.
  • Create real-time gesture, movement, depth, and voice-driven interactions.
  • Develop live background segmentation and compositing workflows.
  • Integrate speech-to-text, conversational AI, and text-to-speech tools.
  • Create and adapt generative visuals for a spherical LED display.
  • Integrate depth cameras and gesture-tracking technology.
  • Map and calibrate content using the LED vendor's specifications.
  • Prototype solutions and communicate technical risks and tradeoffs.
  • Test, optimize, document, and support on-site deployment.

Requirements
  • Strong experience building real-time interactive installations in TouchDesigner.
  • Experience with live video keying, segmentation, compositing, or AI matting.
  • Experience with depth cameras, gesture tracking, or computer vision.
  • Experience working with LED displays or curved surfaces.
  • Experience integrating AI, voice, or generative technology.
  • Ability to lead technical discovery and work with nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Comfort working on an exploratory project where the scope may evolve.

Nice to Have
  • GLSL, Python, 3D, or machine-learning experience.
  • Experience with experiential, event, retail, or brand installations.
  • Experience deploying public-facing voice or AI experiences.

Benefits
This is a freelance, project-based engagement and is not eligible for CoCreativ employee benefits. The engagement may begin with a paid discovery and feasibility phase, with the potential to continue through development and on-site deployment if the project moves forward.
